Rangers Fan View: 4 things we learned against Motherwell
Rangers opened up their league campaign with a solid win over Motherwell at Fir Park. Graham Dorrans grabbed both goals for us in the win but I will discuss four things I learned from viewing the ninety minutes. Hopefully the win can be built upon with two league home matches coming up against the Edinburgh sides.
Fabio Cardoso and Bruno Alves are a great partnership
During this match, which was a hard-fought victory for us, we saw the Portuguese central defensive partnership blossoming. Up against Louis Moult, who is normally a tricky customer, they both handled him well. We saw in the dying stages exactly what each player brings to their end of the bargain. Cardoso brings pace and fantastic positional sense; Alves brings the calmness and old-school defending and fantastic leadership. Neither were at fault for the goal and both have a partnership that we can hopefully hang our hat on going forward.

Graham Dorrans will be a big part of any success we have
We waited a long time to get him in, but you can see the quality he brings to our midfield. Aside from his two goals, I was impressed with how he was able to dictate the game from the midfield area. He knew exactly when to quicken the pace of the game and when to slow it down in certain situations.
His work rate on both sides of the ball was also very good and of course, he capped off his man-of-the-match display with two very good finishes, especially the first one where he had to show a cool head and guide the ball home.

We lack something in attack – Miller and Herrera don’t work
Of course, it’s early days but the signs for this partnership does not look too promising. I feel to get the best out of Herrera we need someone who will play closer to him and get beyond him. He is the one who likes to come deep and link the play. Currently, Herrera and Miller want to play in the same spaces and it was evident in this fixture.
Miller tends to play in a floating role just off Herrera. However, I feel he should be playing on the shoulder of the last defender, which will allow Herrera to drop deep and link the play. Miller floating caused Herrera to be isolated against three defenders for the most part of the match. Neither of them looked very much like scoring – apart from Miller’s sitter in the second half. Hopefully they can form a more cohesive partnership or we may have to try Morelos and Herrera to see if that is any more fruitful.

Caixinha willing to do anything tactically to get wins on the board
Caixinha was not afraid to change things at 2-1 up and go with five at the back. Perhaps last season that was the kind of lack of flexibility we had to endure under Mark Warburton and his unwillingness to try and see out games that cost us points.
It may not have been the sexiest of subs to replace Kenny Miller with Danny Wilson and go five at the back but ultimately it worked and it helped us see out the game.
