RefCam footage shows quick VAR decision in Crystal Palace vs Man United match

'RefCam' may be a breath of fresh air in the Premier League after a decision in the Crystal Palace vs Manchester United match was decided quickly. But the innovative technology is not about to become a permanent feature.

For the first time in Premier League history, referee Jarred Gillett wore a 'RefCam' during the match at Selhurst Park earlier this week. Prior to the game, the league had confirmed this initiative as part of a unique one-off programme aimed at highlighting the challenges faced by match officials.

Although the camera footage was not shown live, the footage has now been released. This innovative footage is being produced by Premier League Productions to provide a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by referees in the top tier of English football.

In the footage released, fans have had the chance to watch the fixture from the point of view of a referee. This includes audio and pre-match protocols, from walking out of the tunnel to the referee's pre-match handshakes with players.

Perhaps what the Eagles supporters would be more interested in seeing was the penalty claim which was waved away by Gillett at the time. The Australian can be heard saying he felt Tyrick Mitchel ran into United defender Jonny Evans before going to ground.

In one of the clips, Gillett is heard explaining his decision and discussing it with VAR Tony Harrington, who confirms the on-field decision not to award a spot-kick. After Mitchell went down in the box, Gillett said: "No, no, no way, no. He's run into him, for me.

"The attacker has run into [Jonny] Evans, for me. That's how I read it." VAR Harrington, then replies: "checking possible penalty," and quickly decides: "I'm happy that's not a penalty."

Gillett adds: "Yeah, agree," and proceeded to tell players: "Confirming on-field decision of play on, no penalty."

Speaking after the 4-0 win over United, Oliver Glasner said: "Congrats to the team for the result and for the performance, especially in the second half," he said. "I think [in the] first half we can do better; we were very efficient, scoring two very nice goals, but we gave them too many passes through our lines. It was an open game but we were very efficient.

"We had some adaptations at half-time. In the second half, especially after the third goal, we played really great football. The players had a lot of fun being on the pitch, playing together and creating chances. It was a great performance and especially a fantastic result."
