Key Cardiff City trio Callum Robinson, Callum O'Dowda and Jak Alnwick have all committed their futures to the club in a triple boost for the Bluebirds.

The uncertainty surrounding the club this season has meant contract talks have been kicked down the road somewhat in comparison to last season, given the league position and the sacking of Erol Bulut.

City had 12 players whose contracts were due to expire at the end of the current campaign, however that number has now been chopped to nine, with three important players in this Bluebirds squad having been tied down to new deals.

The club's top scorer, Robinson, was seen as a priority for not only the club but the supporters, too. Not too often have Cardiff had a striker on 11 league goals with 17 games of the season still left to play. Sign up to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here.

The Republic of Ireland international has emerged as one of the most important cogs in the wheel under Omer Riza and the club have managed to secure his services for another two years, taking his contract up until the summer of 2027.

“It’s been a good start to the year. I’ve been working really hard, starting in the off-season and the aim was to get back in the team originally, then get back scoring goals. I wanted to earn myself a new deal and I’m so grateful that it’s happened," Robinson said.

“We’ve got some really good young players and that’s why I wanted to continue here. I feel like we can push on. We had a tough start to the season but since then we’ve been stable, and in the last few weeks we’ve been really strong – hopefully that can continue.”

O'Dowda, meanwhile, has been a consistent performer for the Bluebirds since his arrival. His versatility has seen him deployed on the wing, as a wing-back and a conventional left-back and has rarely let the side down.

His entire 2023/24 campaign was essentially cancelled out due to injury, but the Irishman has been a steady operator this term and him signing a new, lengthy deal until 2028 will certainly go down well with City supporters.

“I’m delighted. I think everyone can tell how much I’ve loved this city and representing the club over the past two and a half years. I’m really happy to get it over the line and kick on now," O'Dowda said.

“Coming to Cardiff City, it was a time in my career that revived everything for me. I’d say the love for the game and coming to a city like this, it brought it all back for me. The way the Club have been, the fans, a special thanks to everyone who has gotten it over the line. I’ve really enjoyed living here with my family and friends and it’s a special place to me now. I can see the vision and direction of the club, it’s up to myself to try and drive that with the boys now.”

Alnwick has been an ever-present this term and has usurped Ethan Horvath to become the undisputed No.1. He is a leader within the group and has donned the captain's arm band for a great chunk of this campaign - 18 games - owing to various injuries to club captain Joe Ralls and vice-captain Aaron Ramsey.

His one-year extension was triggered when he played against Swansea earlier this month. He said: "I knew it was coming for the Swansea game, and what a way to sign it off. It didn’t come any better than that – clean sheet, three points and three goals. Getting that extra year, I’m delighted I’m going to be staying here longer now.

“I got a feeling when I first came down here, the way the club have supported me, the fans, everything about the place, it gives you a feeling of home. I think everyone who plays for this club, they always come back and visit, whether they eventually retire or live here, which is a credit to the club and the city. It’s a special place and for me to be able to stay longer; I can’t wait. Hopefully we can finish the season strong, and next season we can really kick on."

Bluebirds boss Riza added: “I’m delighted. It’s nice to get it over the line; it’s been in the process for a few weeks. They are really important players, who have done a great job this season. They are part of what we want to have moving forwards.

“For me, fundamentally, it’s important that we’ve got a good group of people. All three of them are a credit to themselves and their families. We’ve got a lot of young players here, and people look up to them because they do things properly. Hopefully we can move forward together.”
