Sky Sports have issued Manchester City a live apology after comments made by pundit Tim Sherwood. Speaking on Gilette Soccer Saturday, the former Aston Villa coach took a jibe at City and their ongoing case with the Premier League.

Referring to City's spending habits and the much-publicised legal battle over 115 alleged breaches of financial regulations, Sherwood claimed that Pep Guardiola's side 'play by their own rules'. City deny any wrongdoing and an outcome from their hearing with the league is expected in the near future.

After the comments made by Sherwood, presenter Simon Thomas took the chance after a break to offer an apology to the club. "Welcome back, before we get underway, the whistles going around the country, we had a conversation earlier today in the build up about Manchester City, their transfer business," he said on-air.

"There was a comment made about Man City and the rules. I just want to say that they are absolutely not the views of Sky Sports and we apologise to Manchester City for those comments."

The Sky panel had been discussing City's January transfer business. Last week three new players were confirmed as joining Pep Guardiola's side. Attacker Omar Marmoush joined along with defenders Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov.

In total it takes their mid-season spending to almost £130million as they seek to rebuild following a rocky couple of months. City once more took the top spot when it comes to revenue generated by Premier League clubs, recording £715million in turnover for the 2023/24 period.

City have been under immense scrutiny for their financial activity since the league announced their unprecedented charges in January 2023. A three-month hearing came to a conclusion in December with a verdict set to become public before the end of the season.

Potential punishments include relegation and the stripping of titles as well as fines and points deductions. City have not let the background noise stop them from reinforcing the squad, though.
