I spotted Ruben Amorim gesture that laid bare Manchester United's Old Trafford problem

Manchester United continued their dismal run of form at Old Trafford as they were beaten 2-0 by Crystal Palace to end their upturn in form in recent weeks.

United had won three in a row in all competitions heading into the game, but defeat means their wait for back-to-back Premier League wins this season will go on.

Kobbie Mainoo was a surprise choice to lead the line but after a bright opening United were toothless, offering barely a threat to Dean Henderson's goal. At the other, Jean-Philippe Mateta scored twice to remind the hosts of the value of a goalscoring striker.

Fernandes fury

When Crystal Palace took the lead at Old Trafford it set off that familiar rage within Bruno Fernandes, who was incensed at the officials. It looked like Fernandes was arguing for a push on Leny Yoro by Maxence Lacroix, but he was the only United player aggrieved by the perceived injustice. It was never a foul.

First Fernandes chased referee John Brooks across the pitch, before coming over to the touchline to try and harangue fourth official Ben Toner, who was having nothing to do with the United skipper.

It was a bizarre claim from Fernandes and another example of how he doesn't always use his passion in the right way. At this stage, he needed to get his teammates going, not lose his head at a decision that he had no chance of getting and wasn't deserved.

Amorim gesture

United had just gone behind at home again when their afternoon threatened to unravel completely. Some hesitant and nervous defensive play between Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot and Lisandro Martinez saw the ball lost and Palace wasted a good attacking opportunity.

On the touchline, Amorim shouted across to his players and gestured with his hands to the ground. It was a signal for them to calm down and clear heads, but too often at Old Trafford this season that has been impossible.

This was the seventh home defeat of the season and the fifth in the last six Premier League fixtures at Old Trafford under Amorim. There is a fear factor for United at home now and it can quickly spread around the stadium. Amorim could sense it once again after Palace's inevitable opener.

Onana's celebration

One thing Andre Onana doesn't lack is character and when he got fingertips to Mateta's clipped finish just before half-time, he clenched both fists and roared in celebration when he saw the ball go wide.

It was the best chance of the half and although the offside review would have been touch and go, it was still a big moment. Despite the theatrics, the officials didn't even give Palace a corner.

Onana's issue is his inconsistency and he wasn't celebrating when he was caught too far off his line when Lacroix's header looped over him and hit the crossbar. Onana was then stranded when Mateta had a simple tap-in.

New arrivals

United have made a habit of unveiling new signings on the pitch in recent seasons but the welcome afforded to Ayden Heaven and Patrick Dorgu was pretty low key.

With this being the closest home game to the Munich anniversary, the build-up focused on tributes and it meant Heaven and Dorgu were presented to the crowd 20 minutes before kick-off. The Stretford End roused itself for a couple of chants, but the timing didn't lend itself a spectacular welcome.

Heaven and Dorgu then retreated to take up their seats in the directors' box. Heaven might have to wait for his chance in the team, but as Dorgu watched United toil down the left he would have fancied his chances of making an impact on this team as early as next Friday.
