West Ham 0-0 Arsenal.

A point from this game is a good result though a win is crucial this weekend against Stoke.

Here are three talking points from the game…

Another great defensive performance

We conceded 7 goals in David Moyes‘ first three games in charge and it was clear that he needed time to work with the squad. The laziness in the side, the lack of defensive organisation, and poor tactics frustrated the fans under Slaven Bilic but this has all changed.

In our last three games against three of the best sides in the Premier League, we have only conceded 2 goals and kept 2 clean sheets. Winston Reid did struggle earlier on in the season though he has been one of our best players under Moyes. Let’s not forget that Aaron Cresswell has transitioned smoothly into a centre-back role and he now looks more confident defensively. Will this continue against Stoke?

Will Moyes be able to find the right balance for the smaller teams?

There is no doubt that we have exceeded expectations in our past three games. Going into the game against Manchester City, we did not expect to gain any points from the upcoming fixtures. But we have gained 4 points from the games against City, Chelsea, and Arsenal in what has been three fantastic performances.

Moyes’ tactics have worked perfectly but he needs to find the right balance for the game against the smaller teams, starting this weekend. We cannot sit deep for the majority of the game as we have done. Wins are expected in these games and we have to play more expansive football. But will this see us lose our defensive organisation?

Javier Hernandez should come in for Michail Antonio

Michail Antonio was perfect for these big games and Moyes’ tactics. Given that we were going to sit very deep, we needed someone quick on the counter who could run in the channels. But Antonio did generally have a poor attacking performance in these games.

Now that Hernandez appears to be fully fit, now may be the time to give Antonio a rest. We do have relatively easy games for the rest of the month and we should be creating more chances. Who better than Hernandez to convert these?
