West Ham United Fan View: 3 things to look out for against Watford

Marko Arnautovic is having a bad time
Marko Arnautovic is having a bad time

West Ham face Watford this Sunday in what will be David Moyes’ first game in charge for the Hammers. We currently sit in the relegation zone and Moyes is under intense pressure to deliver in his first game. Our opponents have had a great start to the season, currently sitting in 9th place. Here are three things to look out for…

A change in fortunes for Marko Arnautovic?

We had high hopes for our summer signings though they have not overly impressed. The biggest disappointment has certainly been our club record signing Marko Arnautovic. We knew that he would be inconsistent but we are now 11 games into the season and he has not shown any signs of his quality.

Arnautovic has not scored or assisted in the Premier League for us but will we see a change under Moyes? It is a clean slate for Arnautovic and he can turn his West Ham career around starting this Sunday. We need goals from our wingers and Arnautovic does have the quality to provide that. Will we see him start this Sunday?

Will Moyes show trust in youth?

Under Slaven Bilic there were many calls for our brightest young talents to get a chance in the first team though we did not see this take place as often as we would have liked. Moyes has shown that he will hand chances to young players if he feels that they are good enough. Adnan Januzaj was one of the best players at Manchester United under Moyes. So will we see Moyes trust in youth at West Ham?

Declan Rice did feature heavily under Bilic in our first four games of the season though he did fall out of favour. With Jose Fonte out injured for a rumoured 2 months, could we see Rice become a key player in Moyes’ West Ham? Javier Hernandez is doubtful for this weekend’s game having been injured whilst on international break. Will Toni Martinez finally get his chance in the first team after scoring goals for fun for the U23s?

A new West Ham under David Moyes?

West Ham are in a crisis. We have not won a game since the end of September and Moyes has a big job on his hands. But how much will he change? Will we see a change in formation? Will big names be dropped? One thing is for sure – this is going to be a long process.

Richarlison is the biggest threat in Watford’s team with the Brazilian winger impressing with his flair and ability to beat opponents one-on-one. He has scored four times and assisted twice already this season and Moyes has to fix our defensive issues in order to ensure that Richarlison does not an impact on the game.
