New Tottenham Europa League challenge clear amid Chelsea and Man United boost but Newcastle blow

Tottenham are still yet to confirm their Europa League spot for next season following the latest round of results with Manchester United, Newcastle and Chelsea all in action. Following defeat to Manchester City on Tuesday evening, Spurs remained on 63 points with it possible they could seal fifth-place the following day without even kicking a ball.

Man United, Chelsea and Newcastle were all in with a chance of still qualifying for Europe's second club competition, but that changed significantly on Wednesday. A 2-1 victory for Erik ten Hag's side against Newcastle has seen their hopes boosted with their opponents, as a result, hitting a setback.

On the south coast, Chelsea put in a disciplined performance to beat Brighton, despite a nervy finish after a Reece James red card, and move themselves up to 60 points, three above both Newcastle and Man United.

With just six points now separating all four teams, the final day permutations have become clear with football.london taking a look at all the possible scenarios.

In short, Spurs simply just need to avoid defeat and the confirmed Europa League spot through the final standings will be theirs. A draw, while not what Ange Postecoglou will be aiming for, would also be enough regardless of what Chelsea do against Bournemouth this Sunday.

The Lilywhites can only finish as low as sixth and despite that often being enough to play Europa League football the next season, it may not be enough this time round. Following their final league game against Brighton, United's season is not done with the FA Cup final against Manchester City to come the following week.

Of course, Pep Guardiola's side are the clear favourites however a United triumph would hand them a Europa League spot, at the expense of the team that finish sixth. It is also worth discussing the goal difference factor especially with Newcastle's superior tally of +22.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are on +13 with Spurs following closely on +10 which would mean the Blues finish above their London rivals with a victory, but only if Sheffield United defeat Postecoglou's side. Finally United, who are still eighth despite beating the Magpies, enter the final day at a significant disadvantage with their -3 goal difference.
