Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney continues to hunt for his next role after leaving Plymouth Argyle on New Year's Eve.

The 39-year-old was sacked by the Devon club after picking up just five victories since joining them at the beginning of the season. Plymouth were left languishing in the relegation zone upon his departure and continue to struggle at the foot of the Championship under new head coach Miron Muslic.

More than a month since his exit from Argyle, Rooney finds himself at a crossroads in his post-playing career. With his next full-time job not confirmed yet, MEN Sport has taken a closer look at his options.

United reunion

Speaking on the Footy Accumulators No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Sam Allardyce suggested last month whether a reunion at United as a striking coach could be a good next step for Rooney. "Is there enough for you to do as a striking coach? Because I’ve had a striking coach and I thought, yes, another voice is very good," the former Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers manager said.

"But, I wouldn't say they were full-time, I’d say a part-time striking coach is probably enough, because there's so many other things you need to do. Wayne’s addicted to football, he has the addiction.

"I mean, we're all addicted to football, but Wayne particularly has shown his addiction as he’ll travel anywhere."

Coaching return

Shortly after Allardyce's suggestion about Rooney becoming a striker coach at United, Rooney announced his return to coaching will take place this month. He was named as an ambassador for Football Escapes and will be hosting his first coaching session for children at Dubai's Jumeirah Beach Hotel between February 17 and 21.

Last week, it was announced that Rooney's training session had sold out.

Punditry battle

Rooney's likely next move now is to drop into punditry having become a popular figure on the major networks for his strong views. Both Roy Keane and Gary Neville have followed the path from management into punditry to great success and while the latter shows no signs of slowing down, Keane has expressed his desire to step away from it soon.

According to The Mirror, Sky Sports, BBC and TNT Sports are all battling to tie him down. The BBC want Rooney to join them on their new look Match of the Day next season which, considering the nature of the show, would allow the former striker to work for another network too.

Sky Sports rate Rooney highly too and have used him recently on the Stick to Football podcast with Neville, Keane, Ian Wright and Jill Scott. TNT would be considered outsiders but he has worked alongside his old teammate Rio Ferdinand last season for the match between Everton and United at Old Trafford.

Managerial links

According to Gambling.com, Rooney is one of the favourites to take on the job at Derby County for a second time if Paul Warne is sacked by the East Midlands club. He is currently priced at 5/1 to be hired by the Rams who have not won since Boxing Day.

Current favourite to replace Warne is Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard at 11/8.
