Ben Doak could be set for a surprise call-up for this summer’s Euro 2024, and Liverpool’s own ‘Scottish Wayne Rooney’ will be aiming to make a similar impact to the former England and Manchester United star.

The 18-year-old was a surprise inclusion in Steve Clarke’s provisional Scotland squad for this summer’s tournament in Germany. He’s joined by clubmate and international captain Andy Robertson in the 28-man squad.

That will be cut down to 26 before the tournament, meaning Doak isn’t quite on the plane to Germany just yet. If he does earn a place in the final squad though, he’ll look to live up to his nickname.

It’s been a monumental rise for Doak, who shot through the ranks at Celtic before being handed his first chance at senior football in January 2022. Then-Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou was suitably impressed to make Doak the club’s second-youngest player at just 16 years and two months against Dundee United.

His rise to the senior side saw him nicknamed ‘Wazza’ in training, in a direct comparison with Wayne Rooney bursting onto the scene. Speaking to the BBC in 2022, Doak’s agent Jackie McNamara said: "He's a Scottish Rooney. That's what I said to Ange at Celtic, I told him I've never seen anything like Ben."

That star quality saw him attract the interest of Liverpool, and he made the move to Anfield that summer, where he has continued his development. He would make his senior debut for the Reds in November 2022, before featuring in the Premier League against Aston Villa a month later.

Jürgen Klopp was certainly a big fan. Describing Doak’s performance against Karlsruher in pre-season last summer, the German responded: “Oh my god”.

Doak has been earmarked for a Scotland call-up for some time, but after undergoing surgery on a meniscus tear in December, it seemed his hopes of making it to this summer’s European Championships had been halted.

A recent return to training though has been enough to convince Clarke though to hand him his opportunity. "Ben has a lot of talent," the Scotland head coach said.

"He catches your eye. Pace is something we haven't got in abundance.

"I've never had the chance to work closely with Ben. It just seemed like the right opportunity to put him in. We'll have a look and see how he does."

Liverpool.com says: What an opportunity it will be for Doak if he does make the final Scotland squad for the Euros. He himself must have thought his chances of making the tournament were over when he picked up his injury at the end of last year.

Given his nickname, he’ll be looking to explode onto the scene just like Rooney did back in Euro 2004. Doak is certainly an exciting talent, and Liverpool fans will be watching on with interest if he makes it to Germany.
