Liverpool could become the first team to top the revamped Champions League group phase table tomorrow when it faces PSV. The Reds require a point to guarantee it, or for Barcelona to fail to beat Atalanta in Italy.

Ahead of the trip to the Netherlands, Arne Slot oversaw a training session in front of the cameras where there was mixed injury news. Joe Gomez has made a surprise return, on the one hand, but there was still no sign of Curtis Jones or Diogo Jota.

Meanwhile, there were plenty of young players who were involved in the session, including several who have been impressive for the U19s in the UEFA Youth League this year. Here's what Liverpool.com spotted as the session unfolded.

Liverpool injury latest

Gomez made a surprise return here but Jones and Jota remain out. Slot will offer a full injury update when he speaks to the media at 6.45pm UK time this evening (1.45pm ET) but it would appear that Gomez is now an option to select again.

Elsewhere, there were no players missing unexpectedly. The likes of Mohamed Salah and Ryan Gravenberch should be rested while here is an opportunity to do so, though the Egyptian will be desperate to further increase his goals tally.

No risks will be taken with the huge trip to Bournemouth in the Premier League coming up in just a few days. That, in the context of the season, is a considerably bigger fixture.

Young talents step up

Liverpool has several names to watch out for coming through its academy system, with James McConnell, Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha among them. But there were lots of others involved in the session to help expand the numbers and offer an opportunity some wonderkids to gain some more senior experience and exposure.

Kieran Morrison (attacking midfielder), Issac Mabaya (full-back/central midfielder), Trent Kone-Doherty (winger), Wellity Lucky (center-back), Amara Nallo (center-back), James Norris (left-back), Dominic Corness (midfielder) and Tommy Pilling (midfielder) were all spotted. Nallo is perhaps the closest to getting some senior action, though Gomez's return adds another body in his way.

All smiles and relaxed

Alexis Mac Allister and Darwin Nunez could be seen sharing a joke while Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson were laughing with each other as Liverpool's players emerged. Spirits are understandably high at the moment, and why wouldn't they be?

Liverpool needs a point to secure top spot and PSV only needs a point to qualify for the play-off around, which would have been its main aim before a ball was kicked. That result would suit both teams, and though the Reds will want to win and make it eight wins from eight in Europe, preparing as best it can for the weekend's trip to Bournemouth is far more important.

Fighting on all fronts, Slot will have to manage his roster and take the chance to rotate things as much as possible as and when he can. That might well be the reason there were so many young talents involved here.
