Arne Slot agrees with Jamie Carragher as two Liverpool players handed new challenge
Arne Slot has called for his squad to chip in with more goals, with the Liverpool boss seemingly agreeing with Jamie Carragher’s verdict on Dominik Szoboszlai and Luis Diaz.
The Reds have been very reliant on Mohamed Salah this season, with the Egyptian having scored 25 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions so far. When his assists are taken into account, Salah has played a part in well over half of Liverpool’s goals this season.
That has left the Reds in a superb position to win some silverware this season. They currently lead the Premier League by six points with a game in hand on their rivals, while they are still in the running for three other trophies, with another Wembley final up for grabs when they face Tottenham in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Thursday.

Carragher though wants to see other members of Liverpool’s squad to contribute more, and called out Szoboszlai and Diaz in particular when discussing the Reds’ reliance on Salah during Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.
“They do a lot for the team, Szoboszlai and Diaz, but when you look at Szoboszlai, he’s got five goals and assists. You need more from that position,” Carragher said.
And it seems Slot agrees with the former defender, having confirmed during his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash with Spurs that he wants to see some of his attacking players scoring more goals - as well some of his other players.
Asked whether he wants his No.9s to be facilitators or goal-scorers, Slot responded: “I will be happy if that player becomes both. So facilitator - nice word, I didn’t know that one yet - and scoring goals himself. That’s what we want to achieve in the end.
“But I also saw the penalty from Cody [Gakpo] where Lucho [Diaz], as a nine, played a part without even touching the ball. He dragged the center-back out which led to the fact that Cody was in a one vs one, he made a deep run and got tripped.
“In the end, you want attackers, midfielders to score. We’ve spoken about our attacking midfielder as well, we need to get goals from many positions, including center-backs that can score from set-pieces.
“We are trying to work on the training ground and with the feedback we give them after the game to make the team better and better, and in the end, the No.9 should be a facilitator like a winger, but a winger and nine should also score goals.”
Liverpool.com says: While Salah is scoring with such frequency, it’s not too big a problem if others like Szoboszlai aren’t contributing as often. The problem comes if Salah hits a dry patch or, worse still, leaves in the summer.
It is important that the likes of Szoboszlai and Diaz chip in with more goals given their positions, and hopefully Slot can find a way to bring that out of them. He’s managed to find solutions to Liverpool’s other issues so far, so hopefully this is another one he can solve.
