Aston Villa final three fixtures compared to Tottenham after Chelsea draw in huge top four swing

Aston Villa gave up a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Chelsea in the Premier League. The result hands Tottenham a chance to cut the gap to Villa in fourth down to four points.

Tottenham have three games in hand over their competitors for the Champions League and now know that it is in their hands to finish behind Liverpool, Manchester City, and Arsenal.

Unai Emery's side had scored the opening goal early on through Marc Cucurella after John McGinn's effort bounced off the Spanish defender. They led 2-0 at the break thanks to Morgan Rogers firing in against the run of play shortly before the break.

Noni Madueke then gave the visitors a glimmer of hope by halving the deficit in the second half. Conor Gallagher put matters level with 10 minutes to go and Villa were unable to respond.

Cole Palmer was denied by Robin Olsen in stoppage time in a one-on-one before Axel Disasi thought he had won it for his team before his goal was ruled out by VAR. Chelsea will face Spurs on Thursday but for now have done their fierce London rivals a great deal of help in the race for the Champions League places.

Elsewhere, sixth-placed Manchester United shared the spoils with Burnley, playing out a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. Antony ended his goal-scoring drought by getting on the scoresheet before Andre Onana conceded a penalty in the latter stages.

The result ends their hopes of usurping Villa, but it does remain mathematically possible that Erik ten Hag's men catch Tottenham, despite being improbable. United are six points behind having played twice more.

As for fifth-placed Spurs, they will face Arsenal in the North London Derby on Sunday afternoon. Villa are currently seven points ahead of Spurs.
