Brentford vs Tottenham as it happened: Spurs back on track in the Premier League with crucial win
Tottenham Hotspur bounced back from a four-game losing streak in the Premier League with a 2-0 win at Brentford on Sunday thanks to Vitaly Janelt's own goal and Pape Sarr's late strike.
The first half was frantic at times but fairly low on quality, with the deadlock broken when Spurs captain Heung-min Son’s whipped corner bounced in off Janelt in the 29th minute.
The Bees began the second half rapidly and Yoane Wissa skimmed the bar from close range, but they never really threatened an equaliser before substitute Sarr secured Spurs' win, only their second in 12 league games.
Brentford, who fell to their fourth loss in their last five home league games at home, remained 11th with 31 points from 24 games. Spurs' victory moved them up to 14th with 27 points.
Spurs were again without a host of key first-team players, including star defender Micky van de Ven.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou admits his side are a “little bit thin” defensively despite the signing of Kevin Danso.
Spurs signed Danso on loan from Lens and the deal includes an obligation to buy the defender for around £21million at the end of the season.
Postecoglou was delighted with the signing of Danso but admits his squad are lacking defensive options. Micky van de Ven missed the win over Brentford as the club continue to manage his minutes, while the Spurs boss also provided a concerning update in regard to Radu Dragusin.

Tottenham earned a first victory in the Premier League since December 15, as Vitaly Janelt’s own goal and substitute Pape Matar Sarr’s late second earned them a scrappy 2-0 win over Brentford in west London.
Janelt turned Heung-min Son’s corner over his own line midway through a cagey first half in which the Bees had the better of the chances.
Spurs had to weather a storm for most of the second period but Sarr raced onto Son’s pass and poked between goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson’s legs to settle the game.
Here’s how we rated the Spurs players…

"We are staying up," sing the Spurs fans after Sarr's strike surely seals a scrappy win over Brentford. It is easily Spurs' best result since the 4-0 win over Man City on November 23 and sets them up nicely for a big week ahead.

Spurs are living dangerous at the start of the second half and already missing Kulusevski as a midfield presence. The Swede was influential in the first half but now back on the right wing, where he is likely to see less of the ball.

Mikey Moore is playing on the right for Spurs so has been in front of the press box this half. He's obviously a huge talent but has clearly struggled with a very physical Brentford side at times. He looks like he needs to bulk up to be a force at this level.

It has felt like one of those games that might taken a special moment or a mistake to unlock, and it's the latter. Son's corner caused chaos in the box and Valdimarsson and Janelt failed to deal with it. Spurs are ahead but they have struggled to hold on to leads of late, including in last weekend's defeat to Leicester.

How Mbeumo and Wissa became Premier League's best strike partnership
12:36 , Jonathan Gorrie
Though his statistics will get no bump for it, Yoane Wissa may have produced the assist of the season last Sunday when he ran across the edge of the box celebrating a Bryan Mbeumo penalty before it had even been scored.
Did his jog, with arms raised, put Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson off? How could he have known his strike partner was going to score, especially given Mbeumo was retaking a penalty he’d originally missed? Did he get caught in the moment before the moment had even happened?
Frankly, who cares? It was one of the more humorous incidents of the Premier League weekend, and reaffirmed what watching Mbeumo and Wissa for Brentford this season has already laid bare: that these two have a telepathy few strike duos can match.
