Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker have slammed Manchester United's decision to increase ticket prices.

United recently raised ticket prices to £66 per game, scrapping concessions for children and pensioners, which led to fan protests. The Manchester United Supporters' Trust published an open letter earlier this week calling for co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe to reconsider the new ticketing policy.

On the pitch, United are struggling to find form, with Ruben Amorim's side sitting 12th in the Premier League, though they could seal a place in the Europa League round of 16 on Thursday. The club are working to sign players in the January transfer window, but Shearer and Lineker have lambasted the United board for charging fans more to see a struggling team as a way to ease PSR concerns.

Asked on the Rest is Football podcast whether United should sell players to fund a rebuild or insist that Amorim try and work with his current squad, Shearer replied, "By all accounts, they've got not no money to bring players in, so they're going to have to sell, in terms of PSR."

"They've made a real mess of it so far," Lineker said, referring to the United hierarchy. "I mean, they're talking about putting ticket prices up again because of financial difficulties. You just think, 'You're going to put this on the fans?' They've been suffering enough with the football that's been played."

Building on Lineker's point, Shearer added: "How dare they! You go and pay for our errors. Unbelievable." The Newcastle legend sympathised with United's new manager and attempted to gauge his thoughts on the situation. "Fascinated to know what Amorim really thinks about it," Shearer said. "He must think, 'What the hell have I walked into?'"

United are working on a deal to sign Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu in the final days of the transfer window. In attack, the club have been linked with Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel after Antony's loan move to Real Betis was sanctioned. Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho are also linked with an Old Trafford exit.

"[Amorim] needs players that can play in the system that he wants to play because he says he's not going to change, he's not going to adapt," Linkeker argued. "This is the way he believes it should be played. Therefore, their recruitment needs to be for players that can play in certain positions in the way that he wants them."

However, the Match of the Day host questioned how the board could justify charging fans more for tickets. "The stadium's run down a little bit. I've got a number of friends who support Manchester United that go to games, and they say the matchday experience is nothing like it was even just a few years ago," Lineker added. "There are major concerns about that football club. Not only is it going to take time, but they've got to start getting things right."
