Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has sent Lisandro Martinez a heartfelt message following the news that the defender will be out of action for a number of months following a cruciate knee ligament injury.

Martinez had to be withdrawn from the pitch on a stretcher during United's 2-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace. He was left on the turf before receiving treatment.

After the game, head coach Ruben Amorim said: "I think it is a serious situation. A bad situation for us and especially for Licha. Now it is time for all of us to help Licha. He felt it and, when you are a player, you know when it is serious."

The Portuguese manager is expected to be without the centre-back for a long period, with the typical recovery time understood to be around nine months. The club cannot turn to the transfer window either, after it concluded on February 3.

Taking to Instagram, De Gea posted some snaps of himself and Martinez from their time together at Old Trafford. He wrote: "As always you do things... Like a warrior," with a love heart.

Diogo Dalot was spotted in the comments, replying with two love heart emojis while Casemiro took to his own Instagram stories to share a picture with Martinez.

The caption read: "Love you bro. You'll come back stronger. A lot of encouragement, friend," followed by a love heart. Alejandro Garnacho also sent a message to his international teammate saying: "You will come back stronger, our warrior," with a red heart and strong arm emojis.

Following the defeat to Palace, Amorim highlighted the importance the Argentine has in the squad, saying: "Licha is really important for us, not just as a football player, but as a character, especially in this hard moment, now it’s time to help Licha like he’s doing for so long. I think it’s a bad situation, let’s wait to assess things with the doctor but I think it’s a serious situation."
