Gossip: Courtois and Drinkwater tipped to quit Chelsea, Man Utd and Man City 'could groundshare', United 'scout Celtic starlet'

Are Chelsea set for a summer exodus, led by Thibaut Courtois and Danny Drinkwater?
Are Chelsea set for a summer exodus, led by Thibaut Courtois and Danny Drinkwater?

You can divide Chelsea’s squad broadly into two categories of player. The ones who think they are too good to play in a team that’s not in a Champions League; and the ones who were never really good enough to play for a team in the Champions League.

Either way, there’s not much point in them hanging around at Stamford Bridge, so we could see something of a mass exodus from west London this summer.

Today a player from each of these categories is being linked with a move.

Thibaut Courtois, who is very much a Champions League-level player, has reportedly opened talks with Paris Saint-Germain, who will probably be in the Champions League every season for the next 200 years (or for as long as Qatar’s ruling elite maintain their obscene wealth).

(I’ve written “Champions League” too many times in this article already. Will try to stop now – sorry.)

The Mirror says the Belgian goalkeeper, who has repeatedly been tipped to join Real Madrid in recent months, would also be “open” to a move to the Parc des Princes. He would certainly represent a sensible signing for the Ligue 1 leaders, who have struggled to find a reliable option between the sticks despite their lavish spending.

Hammers want Blues midfielder

Then we come to Danny Drinkwater. A Premier League winner he may be, but one who has not thrived since last summer’s £35m switch from Leicester.

The former Leicester midfielder is said to be “frustrated” at making just five league starts for the Blues all season and is being lined up for a transfer to a team that will actually pick him: namely, West Ham.

The Telegraph says the Hammers believe the 28-year-old would “suit them perfectly”, but a potential “stumbling block” is that Chelsea are looking to recoup “most, if not all” of that 35 million quid they spent on him.

A move to east London would apparently be “appealing” to Drinkwater because it means “he would not have to move house for the second time in 12 months”. Wow, the Hammers must feel very flattered.

Meanwhile, perhaps the most entertaining rumour of the day – even though it has nothing to do with transfers – is the Sun’s claim that Manchester City and Manchester United could do a “groundshare” if the Red Devils redevelop Old Trafford.

City are apparently “prepared” to let their rivals use the Etihad if United’s plans to enlarge the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand leave them temporarily homeless. However, the rent “is likely to be high” – and City chiefs may also make their tenants do all the washing up and toilet cleaning.

Elsewhere, Newcastle are attempting to snatch two promising Sunderland youngsters – Joel Asoro and Josh Maja – as the Black Cats plummet towards League One (Mail), Tottenham and West Ham are competing to sign Barcelona midfield flop Andre Gomes (Sport) and Man Utd are set to “run the rule” over Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney ahead of a possible summer move (Mail). United are literally linked with a different left-back every day.
