Ashley Young is the latest player to receive racist abuse following Manchester United's Champions League quarter-final defeat by Barcelona on Tuesday, which saw United exit the competition.

Kick It Out, the football equality charity tweeted: "Yet another black player, this time Ashley Young, targeted with racist abuse on social media after tonight's Champions League game.

"Again, we're left asking @TwitterUK the same question - when will you take serious action to tackle the rampant discrimination on your platform?”

In a statement, United said they "strongly condemn" the comments following their defeat.

The statement read: "Manchester United utterly condemns racist social media comments posted around yesterday's Champions League fixture.

"We are working to identify individuals involved and we will take the strongest possible action we can against them.

"There is no place for racism within our game, or in society as a whole, and we are committed to working to make football free from all forms of discrimination."

Young is the latest in a series of players to receive abuse on social media platforms.

Tranmere Rovers called the police at the weekend after MK Dons striker Chuks Aneke was targeted in the wake of Saturday's 2-1 League Two defeat at Prenton Park.

The latest report comes amid mounting concern over racism in football with England's Tottenham full-back Danny Rose recently admitting he could not wait to finish in the game.
