It wasn't an easy weekend for the PGMOL with Michael Oliver's dismissal of Myles Lewis-Skelly in the Wolves vs Arsenal match drawing plenty of controversy. But there could easily have been a justified sending off in the Liverpool match too.

Goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo (twice) ensured that the Reds won comfortably against Ipswich Town. Had that not been the case, much more would probably have been made of Julio Enciso's wild challenge on Wataru Endo.

Enciso, making his first Ipswich appearance since signing on loan from Brighton, flew into Endo, making contact high up on the Japanese midfielder's body and with plenty of force and intensity. On-field referee Michael Salisbury opted to issue only a yellow card.

"I think that this could easily have been red," former Premier League referee Keith Hackett told Football Insider. "I think the player’s lucky. I think the referee’s given him the benefit of the doubt and that’s why he’s got a yellow.

"But this could easily have been a red card. You can’t make challenges in that situation. I think the referee’s given him a yellow and said ‘right fine’. I think the referee’s given him the benefit of the doubt. From my perspective, I’ll be quite clear that these challenges should be outlawed in a game.

"Despite the fact that you don’t want to give a red card, I think you’ve got to because the boot’s high and it’s in the facial area. It’s endangering the safety of an opponent. It does have some force and therefore it’s serious foul play and my expectation would be that he goes.

"He’s very fortunate that the referee has given yellow. I'm surprised to some degree because I think there’s this aspect of VAR that could come in and say ‘look have a review of this’.

"These are the challenges where I do think, a yellow’s been given, I know that Howard Webb talks about referee’s call, but I think there’s an element here that says 'have another look and make another call'."

Liverpool.com says: Enciso was fortunate not to be sent off but Endo avoided injury and carried on. Had the game been tight, there is no doubt that much more would have been made of the situation. That's exactly why uproar about officiating is so infuriating because you only ever remember A) the ones that go against your team and B) those that prove costly in terms of results.
