Struggling winger Antony has secured a loan move away from Old Trafford after finding himself out of favour for a lengthy period at Manchester United - and some United fans in the Manchester Evening News comments section hope that he can rediscover the form that prompted the Reds to part with a huge transfer fee.

The Brazilian completed a transfer from Ajax for £86.3 million in 2022, making himself the club's second most expensive transfer of all time behind Paul Pogba. His time at United began with a debut goal against Arsenal, but he has been the subject of fierce criticism for much his Old Trafford tenure, and has failed to make an impact on new manager Ruben Amorim.

Antony has joined Real Betis on a loan deal, with the Spanish club covering part of his wages. There is no option to buy, so United will be hoping for a fine half-season in La Liga to either see the best of Antony, or inflate his value ahead of the summer transfer window.

Despite his struggles, some fans want to see him do well for Real Betis in their fight for European football. Reader Tankjr says: “Good luck to Antony. It wasn't meant to be on this occasion. Maybe some time away with a run of starts, and playing time in a sunny league played at a different pace with some weaker teams, will help sharpen him up, regain his form and confidence, and possibly expand his game and give him some perspective about struggling at United to help him bring something new and better if he returns from his loan.”

Commenter Ghostdad writes: “I hope he does well, the move to United was bad for him and bad for the club. The transfer fee did not do him any favours, you have to wonder what was going on with United's senior management team.”

Manchester United could come out of the January transfer window short on attackers, with Marcus Rashford's exile and interest in Alejandro Garnacho limiting the club's options. This worries Anniemause: “Whilst I have no problem with Antony going on loan, so far in this transfer window, in doing so United have lost one attacking option from the squad, reduced the wage budget a little but not done much to improve their PSR standing.

"They have effectively, in Rashford, written off another of their current attacking options without saving anything. Bizarrely, it's regularly reported that they are willing to offload at least another one if not more of the remaining attacking options. At the same time they currently seem not to have any likely replacements lined up and potentially the best option they have in the background is a 17 year old Dane who has yet play in anything more senior than an international under-18 game.”

Geldroper agree: ”Antony will do good there because it is a weaker competition. Selling Garnacho to Chelsea is just idiotic and shows Man U has no intention to win games."
