Paul Merson agrees with Alan Shearer on Liverpool vs Ipswich prediction
The pundits are in complete agreement on Liverpool’s chances against Ipswich today, with the Reds being backed for a big win in the Premier League title race.
Arne Slot’s side hosts their relegation-threatened opponents in a repeat of the opening game of the season at Anfield - and they’ll be expected to pick up a similar result this afternoon.
The two sides are separated by 34 points in the table, and with Ipswich coming off the back of a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City, Liverpool will be heavy favorites. They’ll hope a victory can take them nine points at the top, with both Arsenal and Nottingham Forest playing at the same time today.

The good news for Liverpool is it is being widely tipped to claim a big win today. Predicting a 3-0 victory for the Reds, former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson believes today will be a write-off for Ipswich.
“Liverpool just need to keep winning,” Merson said in his column for Sportskeeda. “After their late win at Brentford and the midweek triumph over Lille in the Champions League, they couldn’t have asked for a better fixture than Ipswich at home next! If you are part of the chasing pack, you look at this fixture and go, “oh no” because this is a game Liverpool can win.
“Ipswich must write this game off and focus on the next game against Southampton. I know it sounds unfortunate, but that is the only way they will avoid relegation in my opinion. When you are languishing towards the bottom of the table, you need to know which games you can have a go at and Liverpool away from home isn’t one of them.
“If Liverpool turn up with a good attitude, they should win this game quite easily. Honestly, the scoreline does not matter for them. They should only focus on the result.”
Former Newcastle and England striker Alan Shearer agrees with Merson, with the Match of the Day pundit expecting Liverpool to have no problems today.
“Only one winner,” Shearer told Betfair. “Ipswich got battered by Man City last weekend, and going to Anfield, I would imagine everyone will be saying the same thing other than the odd Ipswich supporter.
“If they can keep the score down and get out of there quickly then, yeah, a tough weekend for them. I can only see a Liverpool win.
“Ipswich will try but it will be very difficult with the firepower that Liverpool have. The impressive thing with Liverpool is even though they're not playing well they're still winning games and getting results.
“Particularly with the game being at Anfield, Ipswich will try to sit in and contain them. I just think with the players that Liverpool have they'll have too much for them and it'll be a matter of how many they score.”
It’s a similar story with Mark Lawrenson for Paddy Power and Chris Sutton for BBC Sport, with both predicting 3-0 wins for Liverpool. Unfortunately for the Reds, it seems they don’t have much chance of extending their lead at the top of the table.
All of the pundits have backed Arsenal to beat Wolves today, although Merson has predicted that Nottingham Forest will draw at Bournemouth, while Sutton expects Nuno Espirito Santo’s side to fall to a 2-1 defeat, meaning they would lose ground on the top two.
