Petr Cech looks forward to 'perfect' end to career with Europa League final against former side Chelsea

Petr Cech, the Arsenal goalkeeper, said the forthcoming Europa League final against his former side will be the “perfect” end to his distinguished career.

Cech, who is retiring at the end of the season, will face Chelsea in Baku after Arsenal produced one of the best European performances in their recent history to defeat Valencia.

The 36-year-old spent 11 years at Chelsea, where he won both the Europa League and the Champions League, as well as a string of domestic titles.

“For me it is a perfect way to finish my career with a final and against my ex-team,” said Cech, who has played in European competition after being usurped by Bernd Leno in league matches.

“It’s spectacular for me and I hope to be able to win as well. That’s what I want to do. I want to win the cup for Arsenal and finish my career.

“You have days when you come home and play well and wonder if you should continue. I prefer to retire two years too early than one year too late. The last dream was to play this European final with Arsenal, and the dream came true.

“You have to be brave, keep calm and play your best game [in the final]. Every single round I went and thought this could be the last game.”

Arsenal’s victory was secured by a hat-trick from the brilliant Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who once again thrived alongside Alexandre Lacazette in attack.

“We reacted well to going behind and we knew we had to score a minimum of one goal tonight,” Lacazette said.

“Auba was unbelievable with an incredible hat-trick, so thanks to him. We have played badly in Premier League during the last month and now we have to use this opportunity. We want to play in the Champions League next season and we want the trophy.”
