Manchester City are set to complete a deal for FC Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez after more talks took place on deadline day.

The Manchester Evening News understands that although City are interested in the midfielder, they are baulking at paying the reported £60million release clause in his Porto contract. But in a twist for City, the Portuguese outfit have insisted on it being paid in full by City, according to local media, due to a sell-on clause inserted into his contract.

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that an agreement 'was reached earlier on Monday' and it was later stated by The Athletic's David Ornstein that the 23-year-old is undergoing medical in Portugal ahead of a proposed move to the Etihad. The transfer is expected to go through in time for the 11pm deadline, making Gonzalez the club's fourth January signing following the signings of Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis.

With that said, the Manchester Evening News has taken a look at the latest reports from Portugal and Spain.

Record - FC Porto and Man City reach agreement for Nico Gonzalez for €60m

"FC Porto and Manchester City have reached an agreement for Nico Gonzalez. After initial approaches in the range of 40 and 50 million euros, the English club have come closer to the blue and whites' demands, with the Porto side benefiting from the recent sale of Galeno to Al Ahli, from Saudi Arabia.

Record understands that the Spaniard is no longer with the team for Monday night’s against Rio Ave, at the usual hotel in Gaia. The midfielder was included in the preparation for the match as usual, although the Dragons are aware that there was a risk a deal for Gonzalez could be struck following talks during the last day of the transfer window."

A Bola - Deal done: Man City pay €60m and takes Nico Gonzalez

"Negotiations between Manchester City and FC Porto for Nico Gonzalez are finalized and the Spaniard will indeed leave for England. The 23-year-old could travel to Manchester at any time on a private flight.

"Andre Villas-Boas and the top brass of the blues and white insisted on the value of the contract termination clause, of 60 million euros, which the Citizens finally agreed to pay - an operation that will be carried out in instalments.

"City are offering a five-and-a-half-year contract and a healthy salary. It should be noted that Barcelona are entitled to 40% of the capital gains (€8.4 million) and Gestifute to 10% of the net revenue for the exclusive contract."

O Jogo - Man City take Nico Gonzalez after paying €60m

"Manchester City have agreed to pay the 60 million euro release clause and sign Nico Gonzalez from FC Porto, journalist Fabrizio Romano reported and O JOGO confirmed.

"The 23-year-old Spanish midfielder has already been authorized to travel to England to undergo medical examinations and sign a contract. It should be noted that Barcelona is entitled to 40% of the capital gains - that is, over €8.4 million - and Gestifute is entitled to 10% of the net revenue from the exclusivity contract.

"All things considered, if Nico leaves for €60 million, the proceeds will only be around €34.2 million. This figure could rise if FC Porto halves the percentage to which Barca is entitled, activating a clause in the contract and paying €6 million to the Blaugrana. In that case, they would receive €43.8 million."

La Opinion - Nico Gonzalez joins Man City for €60m

"Nico Gonzalez, that boy who kicked a ball for the first time in Abegondo while his father had just finished training in his last years at Depor de la Coruna, starred this Monday on the last day of the closing of the transfer market in Europe. Manchester City decided to go for him on the weekend before the end of the transfer period and, after some initial attempts in the negotiation with Porto, contacts were resumed on Monday morning and the two clubs outlined a agreement that was closed early in the afternoon, according to CNN Portugal.

"The English team, who already wanted to incorporate the player when he was a child and his father worked alongside Guardiola in Manchester, will pay around 60 million euros to break the resistance of the Portuguese giants. Nico becomes the largest transfer in the history of Porto along with Otavio a few years ago to Al-Nassr."

La Voz da Galicia - Nico Gonzalez agrees to sign for Manchester City

"Nico Gonzalez will be a Manchester City player in the next few hours. The agreement between the English club, the Portuguese club and the footballer is practically complete and all that is left is for the three parties to sign the corresponding contracts for the 23-year-old from la Coruna to put on his new shirt.

"The amount demanded by Porto is 60 million euros which makes the transfer, by far, the most expensive in the history of Galician football. The midfielder's contract with his new club is still being finalised, but everything indicates that it will be for 5 years, with a salary that exponentially exceeds what he received at Porto, which will also make him the highest-paid Galician footballer in history.

"Although negotiations had been going on for days as Guardiola sees Nico in midfield to fill in during Rodri's absence, the defeat against Arsenal has sped up the negotiation to accelerate and strike a deal. They believe he will increase in value in a very short time.

"After training in the Barcelona youth academy, where he arrived at the age of 12, Nico signed for Porto in the summer of 2023, for eight and a half million euros . The agreement reflected that Barcelona kept 40% of the capital gain from a future transfer, so now he will get a good chunk of around twenty million euros."
