Sunderland boss gives Jayden Danns injury update as striker remains in Liverpool after loan move
Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris has revealed he is unsure when Jayden Danns will be available following his loan move from Liverpool on transfer deadline day.
The striker has joined the Black Cats until the end of the season but under unusual circumstances. The loan deal was agreed on deadline day but not officially announced until the following day due to Sunderland’s game against Middlesbrough falling on Monday.
When the loan was finally confirmed, accompanied with Danns pictured in a Sunderland jersey, it was revealed he will not be available to play in the North East immediately due a minor knock.

“It’s unfortunate that the medical process highlighted an issue that ultimately requires Jayden to take a period of rest,” Sunderland’s sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said when the deal was confirmed.
“Despite this, he remained highly motivated to come to Sunderland and as such we agreed to collaborate with Liverpool to ensure there is an opportunity for him to join us at a later date.”
Speaking for the first time since the deal was announced, Le Bris shed some light on the situation. “We don't know at the moment with Jayden,” the Sunderland explained boss ahead of Saturday’s game against Watford. “We probably have to take it week by week.
“He's still a very young player and it's fair to say that we have to protect this player. So, we will work with Liverpool to find the right moment to bring him into the side.”
When fit, Danns will join a team pushing to claim a spot in the Premier League. Sunderland sits three points off the automatic promotion places and has a game in hand on the top two. With a 14-point cushion to seventh, the Black Cats will also feel confident of gaining a play-off place at the very least.
Danns has played four times for Liverpool this season and has impressed Arne Slot, who named the teenager when listing first-team attacking options last month. However, recurring injuries have already been an alarming feature of his fledgling career.
“This is my first loan move and a chance to prove myself, so I’m very appreciative of the opportunity and I’m grateful to the club for placing their faith in me,” the teenager told Sunderland’s website as the deal was confirmed.
“I’ve done my research and the team is incredible, so this feels like the right step. I’m disappointed that I will be unable to do that straightaway, but I’m proud to have joined the Club and I will work hard throughout this period to ensure I can return to action and play my part.”
