Transfer news LIVE! Chelsea make Osimhen decision; Arsenal in Onana hijacking; Dragusin to Tottenham latest

Transfer news LIVE!

Tottenham have enjoyed a big day in the January transfer window with Radu Dragusin in town for a medical to join Timo Werner as Spurs' winter signings, and a move for Conor Gallagher is next on their radar - while Chelsea, Arsenal and more teams struggle to get deals off the ground.

Mikel Arteta's side have been linked with Amadou Onana and, rather strangely, told to sign Karim Benzema. But the Gunners need to sell before they can buy despite their growing need for a new striker, along with perhaps a new full-back and central midfielder.

Things are looking even worse at Chelsea where links with Victor Osimhen are more focused on a summer deal despite their latest defeat. Ian Maatsen should finalise his loan exit today after completing a medical at Borussia Dortmund. Elsewhere, Kylian Mbappe's name remains in the headlines after new comments from PSG's chairman amid talk of a move to Real Madrid or Liverpool, and Jadon Sancho's nightmare stay at Manchester United is finally coming to an end. Follow all the latest transfer news, updates and rumours with Standard Sport's live blog!

14:26 , Marc Mayo

With Radu Dragusin about to end Tottenham's search for a new defender, Ange Postecoglou's side are not done yet.

The Independent report on Spurs now seeking a new midfielder to run their engine room.

Conor Gallagher is said to be regarded as the ideal candidate to pirouette with James Maddison, or even stand in for the playmaker at times.

Chelsea will demand at least £50m for the academy product, who has worn the armband at times this season.

Do Spurs have that cash to hand? Securing moves for Eric Dier and Bryan Gil would help but their London rivals may not prove ideal negotiating partners...

Feyenoord's Santiago Gimenez, Stuttgart's Serhou Guirassy and RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko have been touted as alternative options.

Chelsea are not rushing into any business unless they are certain it will help their cause this season.

Liverpool not expecting busy January

Tuesday 9 January 2024 16:29 , Matt Verri

Liverpool’s assistant manager Pep Lijnders has revealed why the club are unlikely to make many major signings during the January transfer window.

A complete overhaul of their midfield saw them spend £146million in the summer to sign Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo.

Explaining why the Reds have taken a relaxed approach to the January window so far, Lijnders said: “We spent a lot of money in the summer. We really invested in the squad.

“The ownership brought in the right players. This means that even when you have injuries at the moment, they will be back in not that long.”

Lijnders added: “We always believe in the academy as well. You want to produce your own players to be able to compete, fight and win trophies.

“The reason we have an academy with 250 players running and dreaming and hoping [of playing for the first team] is that in these moments when a season gets tough in terms of injuries, they can back you. So far, they always did.”

Sancho wages delaying Dortmund loan

Tuesday 9 January 2024 09:20 , Alex Young

Jadon Sancho's wage demands are holding up a loan move to Borussia Dortmund.

German outlet Ruhr Nachtrichten report that talks between Dortmund and Manchester United have stalled over salary with the latter wanting their out-of-favour player to sacrifice a portion of his pay packet to facilitate the deal.

It was reported last week that Dortmund would pay around a third of Sancho's reported £300,000-a-week wages leaving United with a hefty bag to hold, prompting them to also ask for a loan fee from Dortmund.

Maatsen set to join Dortmund on loan

Tuesday 9 January 2024 09:01 , Alex Young

Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen will today finalise his loan move to Borussia Dortmund as the Blues weigh up signing a replacement, reports Nizaar Kinsella.

The 21-year-old left-back is set to join the German giants on loan until the end of the season, with no option to buy included in the deal.

Maatsen has started just one Premier League match under Mauricio Pochettino and pushed for a move away, having signed with Moises Caicedo’s football agency Epic Sports in January.

Chelsea hope that six months of first-team football in Germany will increase his value ahead of a permanent sale in the summer.

The Blues accepted a £31.5million offer from Burnley on deadline day in the summer but interested clubs, including Dortmund, were unwilling to match those terms.

ICYMI: West Ham explore Bergwijn move

Tuesday 9 January 2024 08:29 , Alex Young

West Ham will explore a deal for Ajax’s Steven Bergwijn this month as they sweat on injuries to Lucas Paqueta and Jarrod Bowen, but remain reliant on player sales for their January business.

Both Bowen and Paqueta were hurt during Sunday's 1-1 draw with Bristol City in the FA Cup third round, with the club due to carry out further assessments on Monday.

There is hope that top scorer Bowen’s ankle injury will prove minor, but concern over Paqueta, who lasted only 10 minutes before suffering a recurrence of the knee problem that had seen him limp off at Arsenal last month.

Nonetheless, former Tottenham man Bergwijn, who scored in Ajax's 2-1 friendly win against Hannover 96 on Sunday, has emerged as a leading target and the player is thought to be keen on a return to the Premier League, 18 months after leaving Spurs to return to the Netherlands.
