Weekend HOT or NOT: Son silences Millwall racists, King of Norway rules, Tottenham's nightmare comes true

What’s sexy, and what isn’t sexy, in football this week…

HOT

Son Heung-min
Various methods have proved successful in combating racism over the years. But whereas Martin Luther-King went for peaceful marches and big speeches, Tottenham’s South Korean forward has developed a highly effective new technique known as the “hat-trick”. He deployed it perfectly in Spurs’ FA Cup victory against Millwall, whose fans chanted “DVD” whenever Son had the ball – a nonsensical line of abuse that was hilariously silenced each time Son scored until eventually the racists just gave up. The incident also highlighted the sad issue that, despite huge recent advances in digital technology, there are still an unfortunate minority of Lions fans who actually watch DVDs.

Josh King
The Bournemouth forward’s hat-trick in the Cherries’ dramatic 3-2 triumph over West Ham also struck a blow against ignorance – namely by continuing King’s ongoing fight to educate the thousands of English football fans who don’t realise he is Norwegian. Even more impressive was the fact he scored his three goals after initially missing a penalty, and in such feeble fashion that it would have sent lesser players hiding behind Cheikhou Kouyate’s muscular frame for the remainder of the game. But not King, the setback just made him play better. With eight goals in seven games, he is emerging as a breakout star of this Premier League season.

Pep Guardiola
We were told this tactical maestro would bring tiki-taka and sweeper-keepers and Champions League trophies to England, but what nobody expected was just how much the debonair Catalan would love the FA Cup. While managers at other “big clubs” have opted to rest players, Pep has unleashed the big guns in every round, leading City through four very tricky away ties – the latest being a dominant 2-0 win at Middlesbrough. And all this while he still has a Champions League and Premier League challenge on the go. Pep deserves respect for respecting the Cup.

NOT

Daniel Levy
Tottenham fans who live in permanent fear of Harry Kane getting injured saw their nightmares made reality as the Premier League’s top scorer hobbled off early in Spurs’ win against Millwall with a twisted ankle that could reportedly keep him out for the rest of the season. It wouldn’t be so bad if they had a reliable back-up striker, but instead all they have is Vincent Janssen and some attacking midfielders – a transfer market failing that has endured for the past two seasons and leaves the chairman (and his manager Mauricio Pochettino) vulnerable to criticism. Although with Janssen finally scoring his first goal from open play for the club on Sunday, perhaps the timing is perfect? (Ha.)

Olivier Giroud
On the one hand, the French striker scored in an emphatic 5-0 victory that sent Arsenal into the FA Cup semi-final, so really he should be feeling pretty hot right now. But sadly not, because 1) the goal was against non-league Lincoln and nobody will remember it, 2) footage of the strike draws attention to an embarrassing air-shot Giroud did seconds before scoring – and this was more memorable than his goal and, 3) the most notable aspect of Giroud’s performance was that England legend Michael Owen described him in the match commentary as “the type of player Lincoln come up against all the time”. Poor Olivier.

Gloating
Can violence among football fans ever be condoned? Definitely not, but its causes can sometimes be understood. For instance, the Tottenham supporter who chose to loudly chant “we f****** hate Millwall” at a large group of Millwall fans walking past him following Spurs’ 6-0 victory against their south London rivals must have had some idea of the dangers inherent in this activity. It was sad, but not surprising, to see his joie de vivre curbed in brutal fashion.
