Jamie Carragher has defended Liverpool’s recent transfer policy under FSG and Arne Slot, and praised the manager’s ability to improve his players.

Under Slot, Liverpool hasn’t made any significant additions in the transfer market, just Giorgi Mamardashvili - who will arrive next summer - and Federico Chiesa - who is yet to start a Premier League game since his signing from Juventus.

Instead, perhaps the most impressive aspect of Slot’s short spell on Merseyside has been his ability to make the most of the squad at his disposal. “Listen, we all get excited by transfers and we all want to see our team improve,” Carragher said in the latest episode of the Overlap, as he discussed Liverpool’s lack of January business.

“But if you talk about a coach, sometimes a coach is not just buying players, it’s actually improving the players he inherited. If you look at Arne Slot, [Ryan] Gravenberch looks a different player, Luis Diaz looks a different player, [Cody] Gakpo looks a different player. So, he’s had an influence there.”

It’s hard to argue with Carragher’s assessment given Slot has deployed Gravenberch as a defensive midfielder this season, trained Diaz to operate as a false nine and almost exclusively selected Gakpo from a wide area after previously playing centrally under Jurgen Klopp.

All three have played starring roles in a Liverpool team that looks in good shape to win the Premier League title and top the Champions League table in the league phase. But Carragher hopes Liverpool’s modest spending this season will allow the club to seriously strengthen next summer, especially if any of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk or Mohamed Salah were to leave.

“There's no doubt, the fact that Liverpool haven't bought anyone this window, didn't really buy anyone in the summer, there must be a big pot of money there to buy whoever they want maybe next summer,” opined the ex-defender.

In recent days, Liverpool has been linked with moves for Jorrel Hato, Karim Adeyemi and Rayan Cherki. The search for a new left-back is understood to be among Liverpool’s main transfer strategies this summer, with Milos Kerkez strongly linked.

However, under FSG’s ownership the Reds have typically spent modest sums in comparison to their rivals, with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brighton & Hove Albion outspending Liverpool since 2019.
