Jayden Danns made Liverpool history on Wednesday night before a ball had even been kicked at the Phillips Stadion.

The striker was named in the starting line-up for the first time in an experimental Champions League team named by Arne Slot after several key players were left at home for the dead-rubber game at the end of the group stage.

Liverpool traveled to the Netherlands knowing it had already secured passage to the last-16 and finished in the top two, guaranteeing the kindest possible draw. So it was unsurprising to see Danns among the nine changes.

In doing so, he became the youngest-ever Liverpool player to be handed his full debut in a European game.

According to Michael Reid, that record was previously held by Martin Kelly when he started against Lyon in 2009, but at 19 years and 13 days, Danns has eclipsed that record.

It’s an impressive milestone for the academy graduate who played an important role in the team’s Carabao Cup success last term. He was sidelined at the beginning of this season due to injury and only returned to the team in December.

The PSV game was just Danns’ fourth senior appearance of the season, which surprisingly have come across four different competitions. The teenager scored in the FA Cup win over Accrington Stanley earlier this month and was given a brief cameo off the bench in last week’s Premier League win over Ipswich Town.

Slot praised Danns after the goal in the FA Cup, indicating that the forward is very much in his plans going forward, while recent reports have claimed no decision has yet been made on whether a loan move will be sanctioned for Danns in the final days of the January transfer window.

“What I like most about him and most of the academy players is the mentality they have,” Slot said when asked about Danns. "That is a big compliment to him and definitely a big compliment to our youth academy because if you are a youngster and come to the first team, sometimes you're used in a way you might not expect.”

Elsewhere, Liverpool’s experimental XI against PSV included rare starts for several fringe members of the team. Federico Chiesa started for just the second-ever Liverpool game, while James McConnell’s tally is now up to three.

Caoimhin Kelleher, Conor Bradley, Jarell Quansah, Kostas Tsimikas, Wataru Endo and Harvey Elliottt all came into the team for the final group-stage game. Andy Robertson was deployed at center-back, while Cody Gakpo was among the only two players to retain their places from last weekend’s game.
