Three things spotted in Liverpool training ahead of Tottenham as hint of defensive change emerges
Liverpool’s squad was back in training on Wednesday ahead of its Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Tottenham Hotspur.
Ange Postecoglou’s side leads 1-0 from the first meeting four weeks ago and will hope to continue its Carabao Cup success in what has otherwise been an underwhelming season. The Australian coach has boasted about his penchant for winning trophies during his second campaign at clubs, but leading an injury-plagued Spurs to victory at Anfield represents a huge challenge.
Arne Slot is also aiming to win his first trophy in English football, although supporters hope a Carabao Cup triumph would not represent the end of his silverware this season. The Dutchman addressed the media on Wednesday morning before leading training a few hours later. We’ve flicked through the images and footage and made three telling observations

Full group
The last time we saw behind-the-scenes action at Kirkby was ahead of last week’s Champions League trip to PSV Eindhoven. On that occasion, it was a group that included several untested youngsters, many of whom made the journey to the Netherlands.
There were no such players involved on Wednesday, however, as Slot’s strongest squad was put through its paces. All the main stars were involved, including the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo. There was no Trent Alexander-Arnold though, after Slot’s confirmation that the injured Liverpool right-back won’t be back in time to face Spurs.
Joe Gomez and Federico Chiesa, who were left out of the squad against Bournemouth on Saturday, were also included in the photo gallery.
Team selection hint?
With no Alexander-Arnold, Conor Bradley is expected to start on Thursday night and when the Reds head to Plymouth Argyle this weekend in the FA Cup. On the other flank, it’s possible Kostas Tsimikas could play at left-back given Andy Robertson is one of just two Reds to start the last three matches.
With Slot speaking at length about rotation in recent weeks, Thursday seems like an ideal opportunity to give the experienced Scotsman a rest. Interestingly, Liverpool’s X account posted an image of both Bradley and Tsimikas on Wednesday. The post specifically mentioned both players and was the only such photo chosen, other than players who were pictured alongside each other in training.
Szoboszlai & Diaz prove their quality
Jamie Carragher surprised a few Liverpool fans this week by claiming that he wants to see more moments of quality from Luis Diaz and Dominik Szoboszlai going forward. Whether it was intended as a response or not, Liverpool uploaded impressive skills from both men during Wednesday’s session.
A clip of Diaz curling the ball into the net from an impossible angle was uploaded on social media along with the caption ‘first time’, while a video of Szoboszlai twice scoring during a shooting drill was posted. We hope you’re watching, Carra!
