Arne Slot may have just dropped a major team selection ahead of Wednesday's Merseyside derby.

Liverpool faces Everton for the final time at Goodison Park before the latter’s big stadium at the end of the season, although the game was originally scheduled for December. When that match had to be rescheduled due to adverse weather conditions, it was squeezed into the upcoming week, one Liverpool has free due to avoiding the Champions League play-offs.

It comes just three days after the FA Cup trip to Plymouth Argyle, a match in which Slot heavily rotated his squad. There was no place for the likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk or Alisson in the squad at Home Park, with Wednesday’s short trip across Stanley Park clearly on Slot’s mind.

The Dutchman made 10 changes from the side that started against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday night, with several back-up players handed starts such as Caoimhin Kelleher, Joe Gomez, Jarell Quansah, Kostas Tsimikas, Wataru Endo, Harvey Elliott and Federicio Chiesa. Diogo Jota also returned to the starting XI as he looks to regain his fitness following a recent knock.

But one notable absentee was Conor Bradley, someone who has tended to play second fiddle to Trent Alexander-Arnold this season. That the former was not involved in any capacity at Plymouth may be an indication that Alexander-Arnold won’t be fit to face Everton.

The right-back sustained a thigh injury last week against Bournemouth and missed the Spurs and Plymouth games as a result, although Slot said on Friday that there was a chance he could be back for the derby.

“Difficult to say,” was Slot’s response when asked if Alexander-Arnold would be back to face Everton. “Like I said before, it's not going to take months, and not even weeks, but that's only three days after the Plymouth Argyle game, so let's wait and see if he's available.”

“We also have to look at long-term, we don't want to take risks with so many games afterwards, but if he's fit, then of course we will use him.”

Liverpool will definitely be without Tyler Morton for the game, the team’s only other injury at present, As for Everton, it could be without Vitalii Mykolenko after the left-back missed Saturday’s FA Cup defeat against Bournemouth due to a minor issue.

Nathan Patterson also sat out the game and won’t be back in time for the derby. Nor will Orel Mangala, Dwight McNeil, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Armando Broja and Youssef Chermiti, while Seamus Coleman is a doubt.
