Arsenal defender William Saliba has been chosen over Liverpool's Ibrahima Konate as France begin their Euro 2024 campaign against Austria.

The centre-back was one of the standout defenders in the Premier League last season, playing a crucial role as the Gunners took their title challenge to the final day. Despite Mikel Arteta making Saliba his first choice at the back - and being rewarded with several top-tier performances from the 23-year-old - French boss Didier Deschamps has been slow to fully embrace the former Saint Etienne player.

Saliba made his international debut in early 2022 and has racked up 15 appearances for his country before Monday night's match in Dusseldorf. However, he has never really been the first choice in his manager's mind.

Part of the World Cup squad in Qatar, he largely watched on as Dayot Upamecano and Raphael Varane were preferred. Even with Varane having since retired from the national team, Saliba has mostly had to wait his turn, with Konate and Upamecano being the preferred partnership since.

However, after a mixed second season at Anfield - where injuries contributed to an inconsistent campaign - Deschamps has been more open to starting in Germany without Konate. Despite pairing up with Saliba and Konate in the pre-tournament friendlies against Canada and Luxembourg, Deschamps has so far appeared hesitant to start the Arsenal defender.

Speaking prior to the World Cup, Deschamps recognised Saliba's impact in the Premier League: "William is one of the very best defenders in the Premier League. I want him to do what he does very well at Arsenal."

He acknowledged the strong season Saliba had at Arsenal, noting particularly his partnership with Gabriel. "He had a very, very good season," he continued.

"He played many matches, especially with his partner Gabriel, and they were a fundamental part of what Arsenal did this season, particularly in the defensive aspect.

"With us, he has not had the same playing time. There are automatisms which develop through playing matches together. You have repetition and understanding."
