Police who thought a driver had broken down on a motorway actually found he was smoking heroin.

Officers driving on the M62 today, Tuesday, April 30, went to check if the Audi driver, who was pulled over on the motorway near Rainhill, was "OK". Police said they thought the man had broken down.

However, on closer inspection officers found he was "in the process of smoking heroin". Officers tested the driver who was found to be positive for cocaine in his system.

The drugs were seized and the man was arrested and taken into custody. A spokesperson for Merseyside Police's road policing unit said: "We stopped to check if this driver was okay on the M62 near to Rainhill. He hadn't broken down, in fact, he was in the process of smoking heroin.

"He was clearly unfit and the driver tested positive on a #drugswipe for cocaine. His drugs were seized and he was taken to custody."
