Mauricio Pochettino believes summer signing Juan Foyth has “massive potential” – but the Tottenham manager says it is too early to consider throwing the teenage defender into first-team action.

Spurs have refreshed their options at centre-back during the transfer window, selling Kevin Wimmer to Stoke and loaning Cameron Carter-Vickers to Sheffield United while bringing in Davinson Sanchez and Foyth.

Foyth, who arrived on August 30, is thought to have cost between £8million and £10m – but Pochettino does not expect the Argentina youth international to make an immediate impact in his senior side, and intends to handle the 19-year-old’s introduction carefully.

“He is so good with the ball at his feet,” said the Spurs boss. “He is so calm and relaxed, I think it’s fantastic. He is so young but he can be very aggressive and strong too. He has very good legs, a good mentality and he is so mature for his age.

“When we saw him playing at Estudiantes and started to talk with him and his parents and family to try to convince him to join us, it was a big, big deal.

“It took three months with Estudiantes because a lot of clubs were interested in him, but in the end he decided to join us. It was good for him and good for us too.

“Like all the young players, we don’t put pressure on them. It’s a massive change coming from Argentina to England. The football is completely different, the game is completely different. He needs to settle in England first of all and then start to improve, adapt to the game here.

“I think it’s so early to think about giving him the possibility to play. But he’s been doing very well in the last week and we are so happy because the potential is massive.”
