LeBron James surprises I Promise students to present $1 million check for new gym

By all accounts, LeBron James’ I Promise school has exceeded all expectations. James opened the school in 2018, and has already seen significant growth from its students.

But merely opening the school was never James’ ultimate goal. The plan was always to keep expanding the school and giving the students more activities.

James helped deliver on a part of that promise Thursday. The Los Angeles Lakers star surprised I Promise students in his old high school gym. After the shock wore off, James presented the students with a $1 million check from the DICK’s Sporting Goods Foundation that would go toward building a gym.

As James explains in the video, he spent a lot of his early summers in the gym at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School and he wanted to give the I Promise students that same opportunity.

Regardless of how you feel about James’ career, it’s tough to be negative about his efforts with the I Promise school. The $1 million check may not be from James directly, but his commitment to building up the school and helping at-risk kids is more than admirable.
