Blake Bortles loses mind in red zone, twice (!) throws passes well past line

There's a "The Big Lebowski" line that applies to every facet of life, but none more than Blake Bortles on Sunday against the San Diego Chargers

Bortles has to know that this is a league game and that this is not 'Nam ... there are rules.

Not once, but twice, Bortles led the Jacksonville Jaguars deep into the red zone and then undid his quality work by throwing passes past the line of scrimmage. His new nickname is "Smokey," and I am Walter Sobchak.

The Big Lebowski.
The Big Lebowski.

The first throw (seen above) from the second quarter was downright ridiculous. (The bad ridiculous, we mean.) Watch as Bortles scrambles parallel to the line of scrimmage and then completely ignores it, running a full three yards past it to deliver a "touchdown pass" to Allen Robinson.

Not only was it correctly called back, but the illegal forward pass penalty cost them five yards and forced the Jags to kick a field goal.

The second one came at nearly the same yard line in the third quarter. The result was a hilarious lob ball into the end zone aimed (if you can use that word) at Julius Thomas and also called back when he passed the line by yet another clear margin.

Mark it fourth down, dude!

So that's two penalties (and counting) for 10 yards on illegal passes for Bortles. Amazing. This might trump the famous Dan Orlovsky running-out-of-the-end-zone-for-a-safety play considering it happened twice in the same game.

We're still laughing, Blake. Good on you.
