JagrWatch returns: Dallas Stars decide to deal Jaromir Jagr at trade deadline

Jaromir Jagr has just spiced up our NHL Trade Deadline lives.

The Dallas Stars told Jagr that they’re trading him before Wednesday’s deadline, after opting not to give the star winger a contract extension. His agent Petr Svoboda said Jagr gave the Stars a list of teams he’d “be willing” to be traded to, which is nice of him and all but he doesn’t have a no-trade clause.

As Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston notes, it’ll cost a team around $800,000 to trade for Jagr as this point in the season.

So where is Jagr headed? Back East, most likely. Although not necessarily the Eastern Conference …

Boston Bruins

LeBrun sees the B’s as the frontrunner for Jagr, and GM Peter Chiarelli has gone on record as saying he wanted to add a scoring winger to the mix – like that Iginla fella, for example. What ever happened to him? Oh yeah that’s right: He was stolen from right under Chiarelli’s nose by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Say, where did Jagr play the majority of his career before ostracizing a fan base by choosing to sign with a hated rival rather than rejoin his former team, angering his ex-linemate and father figure?

Oh yeah … Pittsburgh.

This would be so much fun.

Philadelphia Flyers

Letting Jagr slip away was an undeniable mistake by the Flyers, which saw their top line fall apart without that veteran glue. GM Paul Holmgren was mulling some moves, but Flyers writer Frank Seravalli writes that the Flyers aren’t expected to be in the mix for Jagr.

Pittsburgh Penguins

If the Penguins pick up Jagr, they’re going to have to slowly skate out to the nWo theme before every game because this is getting ridiculous. But no, they’re not. At least we don’t think they are.

Montreal Canadiens

Jagr has done this dance with the Canadiens for years, nearly signing there before leaving for Omsk of the KHL and then flirting with them last summer before signing with Dallas. His Czech national teammate Tomas Plekanec is a Hab and a potential linemate. Does GM Marc Bergevin want him as a rental if he opted not to sign him as a free agent?

Detroit Red Wings

Another team Jagr’s been obsessed with in the past. He reached out to them in 2011 with a desire to play in their system and play with their talent (i.e. Pavel Datsyuk). And the Red Wings should have a desire to add a top six sniper to the mix.

New Jersey Devils

The Devils don’t have much to trade in the way of picks and should hang onto their prospects, but Lou Lamoriello has reportedly been interested in Jagr in the past. With Ilya Kovalchuk out, the Devils desperately need scoring help. Jagr would provide it, and then things would get really interesting with No. 17 gets back.

Washington Cap …

... Sorry, can’t even finish that one.
