Olli Maatta out of hospital; will miss 3-4 weeks with upper body injury

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta is expected to miss the next 3-4 weeks with an upper body injury after being hit into a bench door Tuesday night against the Minnesota Wild.

Maatta went to the hospital Tuesday and stayed overnight but has been released according to the Penguins.

Per Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, citing a source Maatta did not sustain damage to any internal organs, which was a concern of the team.

“Maatta, however, is said to be in considerable discomfort,” writes Molinari.

Above is video of the play where Wild winger Nino Niederreiter pushed Maatta into a door that was open on the Minnesota bench during the second period of the Pens’ 4-3 win.

“It’s unfortunate the whole situation,” Niederreiter said to Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “I pushed him and went for a change and I think he toe-picked the same time and the door was open. You never want to see anything like that. Obviously I feel bad.”

The 21-year-old Finn has four points in 18 games this season. Last year he played 20 games after dealing with the removal of a malignant tumor, mumps and re-injuring a surgically repaired shoulder.
