Sharks vs. Penguins: Stanley Cup Final Game 5 Live Blog

11:05 p.m. ET: The Penguins took 76 shot attempts to 36 by the Sharks. They dominated possession and still lost. Martin Jones and his play in goal for San Jose was a big reason why.

11 p.m. ET: The San Jose Sharks have defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2. Game 6 is Sunday at SAP Center. Martin Jones had an incredible outing. He made 44 saves on 46 shots on goal to steal the win. The Penguins are up 3-2 in the series.

10:57 p.m. ET: Fans heading out of Consol Energy Center.

10:54 p.m. ET: Joe Pavelski scores into the empty net with 1:20 left. The score is 4-2 for the Sharks.

10:52 p.m. ET: Didn't realize it has been this long.

10:50 p.m. ET: Penguins kill off the power play and now the Sharks will attempt to hold on for dear life the last four minutes.

10:46 p.m. ET: Joonas Donskoi draws a hook and the Sharks go to a power play at the 14:04 mark. Carl Hagelin with the penalty. Massive power play for San Jose.

10:43 p.m ET: Penguins coach Mike Sullivan keeps trying to find offense off faceoffs. He'll load up Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin on the same line then switch them off.

10:39 p.m. ET: The Sharks are playing with fire big time. Shot attempts are 10-4 in favor of the Penguins this period. Pittsburgh has attempted 34 more shot attempts this game. One thing I've admired about the Sharks this playoff is they didn't play passive when they had the lead. They are now and it could cost them.

10:34 p.m. ET: Interesting fact on Logan Couture, who almost got his fourth point on a gorgeous feed to Patrick Marleau in front of Matt Murray.

10:26 p.m. ET: According to Naturalstattrick, Evgeni Malkin has a plus-17.34 CF% Rel and has a 78.13 overall. Excellent puck possession numbers in his best game of the series so far. Score is still 3-2 Sharks.

10:20 p.m. ET: The third period has started. Sidney Crosby won the opening faceoff back to Kris Letang.

10:06 p.m. ET: If the Penguins win the Cup tonight, whoever gets the Conn Smythe should, like, let Martin Jones borrow it for the weekend. He’s been the reason the Sharks remain in this thing after a 17-shot onslaught from the Penguins doesn’t produce a tying goal. At times the Penguins’ offense resembled this: a shot, a save and then a rugby scrum in the Sharks’ goal crease. But Jones denied him. Just incredible work from him. - WYSHYNSKI

10:05 p.m. ET: The shot attempts total difference is quite startling. The Penguins hold a 54-26 differential. They're dominating this game.

10:01 p.m. ET: 

That's the end of two periods. The Sharks hold a 3-2 lead. Martin Jones has 30 saves on 32 shots on goal. The Sharks have taken 15 shots on goal so far.

9:54 p.m. ET:  The officiating tonight is atrocious. There’s a calculated effort not to hand this thing to the Penguins, which has resulted in blatant calls on Roman Polak (boarding/roughing) and Pavelski (interference) going un-whistled, lest the Penguins have a substantial power-play advantage in an elimination game. -WYSHYNSKI

9:52 p.m. ET: The crowd is announced at 18,680, the largest crowd ever recorded for a Penguins game at Consol Energy Center.

9:50 p.m. ET: This was a no-call on Joe Pavelski. Looked like interference.

9:42 p.m. ET: Officiating has been a topic this game with some no-calls and perceived make-up calls. They are Dan O'Halloran and Dan O'Rourke. Scouting the Refs has a report on both. 

9:40 p.m. ET: The Penguins are about to head to the power play. Melker Karlsson for a slash.

9:36 p.m. ET: The Penguins are still holding quite the shot attempts advantage, though the Sharks have made some gains with their power play. They are 36-22 Pittsburgh.

9:34 p.m. ET: Random note from this game, but it seems that Peter DeBoer is fine with having Joonas Donskoi on a line with Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski. Gives that group a little more speed than Melker Karlsson who has been excellent on the second-line. Tomas Hertl is injured and normally played on that first line.

9:32 p.m. ET: The Sharks get a power play after the Penguins get caught with too many men on the ice.

9:31 p.m. ET: Here is Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown.

9:28 p.m. ET: Roman Polak boarded Brian Dumoulin. No penalty. Crowd booed and didn't like the no-call by the official. The Penguins have had two power plays so far and the Sharks have zero.

9:26 p.m. ET: This watch party crowd has been incredible.

9:23 p.m. ET: Malkin vs. Burns on a one-on-one rush. Strength on strength. That was some fantastic hockey. Malkin beat Burns wide but couldn't score.

9:21 p.m. ET: The second period has started.

9:21 p.m. ET: Matt Murray leads the Penguins out for the second period. I’d hang the first goal on him, and the Karlsson goal was on the soft side too. But this is clearly Mike Sullivan saying than an in-game goalie change isn’t the move unless it gets out of hand. It’s Murray’s crease, and he needs to act like it in the next 40 minutes. -WYSHYNSKI

9:19 p.m. ET: Ending speculation for now.

9:09 p.m. ET:  Hockey Night Punjabi was waiting all series for that Simpsons reference it seems.

9:06 p.m. ET: The Penguins have a 25-17 edge on shot attempts that period. The first Pittsburgh power play seemed to shift the momentum of the game.

9:02 p.m. ET: After two periods the San Jose Sharks are up 3-2. First time all series they've held a lead after any period.

8:59 p.m. ET: Lots of goals early in this game.

8:56 p.m. ET: The Sharks never sagged, never sulked, never stopped charging after giving up that second goal. It took some strong backchecking by the Penguins to keep them at bay. And on that third goal, they were able to find a little room and Logan Couture – who has been the only one of the Big Five to have a good series, start to finish – spins a pass to Karlsson for the go-ahead goal. Desperation hockey, but it’s given the Sharks a better push than we’ve seen all series. - WYSHYNSKI

8:51 p.m. ET: Brenden Dillon to Logan Couture to to Melker Karlsson. Sharks goal. Score is 3-2 with 5:13 left in the first. Sharks have another lead.

8:50 p.m. ET: Horrible turnover by Joe Pavelski looking for Joe Thornton. Led to a great Eric Fehr scoring chance. Pavelski has no points through four games this series.

8:49 p.m. ET: Celebrity watch at Consol Energy Center.

8:45 p.m. ET: The Penguins have jumped up big time on shot attemtps. The Sharks started the game pushing more of the play. Pittsburgh was helped by two power plays on this chart. Shot attempts 19-10 in favor of the Pens courtesy of Naturalstattrick. 

8:42 p.m. ET: Penguins hit two posts on that power play. NHL on NBC Play-by-play man Doc Emrick says of goalposts, "they are the size of utility poles some nights."

Phil Kessel had a chance that hit two posts but didn't go in.

8:39 p.m. ET: Brent Burns called for a high stick. Penguins to the power play to get their first lead of the game.

8:38 p.m. ET: Penguins legend Darius Kasparaitis in the building.

8:35 p.m. ET: This game needs a sedative. This is why the Penguins have been who they are this postseason: Zubrus gifts them a power play with a delay of game, and Malkin cashes in. And then the HBK Line converts all of 22 seconds later with Hagelin scoring from Bonino to tie the game. What an absolute punt to the how-do-you-do by the Penguins after the Sharks finally break through. Crowd is louder than it was at the start. - WYSHYNSKI

8:32 p.m. ET: Nick Bonino ties the game up on a wrist shot off a rush. Brenden Dillon with the Sharks' turnover. It's now 2-2 at the 5:06 mark.

8:31 p.m. ET: Evgeni Malkin gets his second power play goal of the series. Tried to pass the puck to Sidney Crosby but it bounced off Justin Braun and into the net. 2-1 Sharks now at the 4:44 mark.

8:28 p.m. ET:  NOPE! The Sharks score again, as Justin Braun fires away and Logan Couture tips it home for a 2-0 lead in the series. So San Jose gets its first lead of the series and then gets its first two-goal lead of the series 1:49 later. Incredible start for the Sharks, who are pinning the Penguins in the zone at the moment and this crowd is dumbfounded. - WYSHYNSKI

8:26 p.m. ET: Logan Couture with a deflection off a Justin Braun shot. 2-0 Sharks. Goal came at the 2:53 mark of the first period. This is far-and-away San Jose's best start of the series. Also their first lead. Penguins look tentative and Matt Murray is giving up the top of the net.

8:23 p.m. ET: Well, the Sharks weren’t kidding. Shoot at everything, every chance they get. You could see the aggressive push from the start, what with Brent Burns going around the net and just firing one rather than trying to stop and set up something. Now comes the interesting part: Do the Sharks control the tone and tempo of this thing, or do the Penguins turn the tables on Game 3 and get it back quickly? - WYSHYNSKI

8:22 p.m. ET: Brent Burns spins around and fires a shot. The San Jose Sharks have their first lead in the series. Similar goal to Joonas Donskoi's OT winner in Game 3. Goal was just 1:04 into the game.

8:21 p.m. ET: Game 5 is underway! Sidney Crosby wins the opening faceoff.

8:17 p.m. ET: Patric Hornqvist says the Penguins need to play "fast" and "for each other" in the pre-game interview with NHL on NBC's Pierre McGuire.

8:14 p.m. ET: This city seems like it's about to erupt.

8:12 p.m. ET: Do home teams have an advantage in the Cup Final? Sure seems that way.
