5 crazy things: World champ gymnast gets big shock on podium

A lot of mad stuff happens every day. Funny stuff. Crazy stuff. Weird stuff. So much stuff, in fact, that you can't keep track of it all. You can't. It'd drive you bonkers.

That's where World of Sport comes in: we spend hours trawling the news for sports stories that will amuse, delight, entertain and shock so that you don't have to.

And today, a gymnastics world champion takes centre stage in our round-up of the craziness from the world of sport.

1) AHHHHH, WHAT'S THAT? - World champ gymnast gets a big shock on the podium

Simone Biles is an all-conquering gymnast, who is now world champion at the age of just 17.

But one thing we learned about Simone on the biggest stage was that she really - REALLY! - hates bees.

Indeed, she would appear to be untouchable if not for a surprise bee that floated out of her flower bouquet.

Yep, you read that correctly: Biles produced a wonderfully dramatic reaction to a bee that gatecrashed her big moment on the victory podium.

The bee was first noticed as the loud speakers blared out the 'Star Spangled Banner' and, as soon as Biles noticed the shock intruder, chaos and hilarity ensued.

2) INJURY CRISIS CALLS FOR CRAZY MEASURE - 55-year-old called up amid chaos

An injury crisis forced Stevenage FC to call up 55-year-old Dave Beasant for the League Two match against Carlisle. Beasant's 26-year-old son, Sam, is Stevenage's regular goalkeeper, but is out injured.

His number two, Chris Day, will start the match while Beasant - Stevenage's goalkeeping coach - will provide the back-up in case Day gets injured.

Despite his age, Beasant is well remembered by football fans for his starring role in Wimbledon's 'Crazy Gang' side of the 1980s - and as captain, he had the honour of lifting the FA Cup when the side beat Liverpool in the 1988 final.

For all the saves he made, however, it's one of the things he dropped that is his most famous single act: namely, the jar of salad cream he dropped on his foot which saw him sever a tendon in his big toe and miss two months of the 1993-94 season with Chelsea.

3) WHAT A BANANA SHOT! - Valencia strikes with mad swerving effort

Nobody was quite sure what to make of it when Enner Valencia signed for West Ham in the summer. English football clubs have often been burnt when laying out huge sums for World Cup 'stars' from minor nations who turn out to be nothing more than flashes in the pan.

One of our writers even said as much during the World Cup, predicting weeks before it happened that Valencia would end up at the Hammers for an eight-figure sum, then turn into an expensive flop. That writer has now been forced to print out a copy of that article and eat it, because Valencia appears to be the real deal.

And on Friday night, he did it again - Valencia produced a stunning, impudent piece of skill as he hit a long-range banana shot that Roberto Carlos would have been proud of.

Intentionally striking it with the outside of his foot, he completely wrongfooted Brad Guzan in the US goal and carved the ball into the net to secure a 1-1 draw. Magical stuff.

4) GREAT GIFT WITH KEANE'S BOOK - Offer of prawn sandwiches with book

A Tesco's store in Ireland has found a wonderful way of marketing Roy Keane's new book, 'The Second Half'.

Instead of a standard price-based offer, it decided to joke about Keane's history at Manchester United, when he famously blasted the 'prawn sandwich brigade'.

In a brilliant prank, the Wilton branch of the supermarket in Cork is now selling Keane's book along with the offer of a prawn sandwich at the deli counter. Cracking stuff.

Keane would not be remotely impressed.

5) GHANA CASH ROW TO BE HOLLYWOOD MOVIE - World Cup debacle set for cinema screens

Why did the Ghanaian FA fly $3m in CASH to Brazil?
Why did the Ghanaian FA fly $3m in CASH to Brazil?

It may have been desperately ridiculous, but the unpaid bonuses row that almost caused Ghana's players to boycott their World Cup match against Portugal in Brazil is apparently set to become a movie.

The Black Stars squad refused to train because of unpaid appearance fees just days before their match against Portugal, forcing the government to send more than £1.8m in cash by plane with players then reportedly keeping the money in their backpacks.

Now, US production company Bugeater Films has hired screenwriter Darryl Wharton-Rigby to write a screenplay for the unbelievable story.

"Football and the players needing the money is kind of the backdrop to the story," Wharton-Rigby said. "But it’s really about the journey of the guy who actually is entrusted to deliver the money and what happens if he doesn’t get it there in time.

"I saw footage of the police cars taking the money on the highway and you can just see that scene playing out in your mind with someone like Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as the guy having to save the day."
