10 former Wanderers you might not know are still playing

From the Premier League to non-league, we have taken a look at some of the former Wanderers you might not know are still playing.

Chung-yong Lee

Lee is now playing in South Korea (Image: PA)

Became a popular figure among Wanderers fans during a six-year spell in the North West before heading to Crystal Palace.

Suffered a broken leg during a pre-season friendly in 2011 which left supporters wondering what might have been.

Currently playing at 35 for South Korean club Ulsan Hyundai and won the division’s Player of the Year prize in 2022.

Tim Ream

Spent three-and-a-half years at Bolton, racking up more than 100 appearances, before heading to Fulham in the summer of 2015.

Helped the Cottagers win promotion back to the Premier League in 2022 and played 21 times last term as Marco Silva’s side finished 13th.

Has been linked with a return to the United States this summer to play under ex-Aston Villa boss Dean Smith at Charlotte.

Tom Eaves

Joined the Whites for £1million in 2010 after scoring against Owen Coyle’s side during a pre-season friendly several weeks earlier.

Played a handful of times for the first team and went on to build a solid career in League One, helping Hull win promotion before heading to Rotherham in 2022. A potential target for Wanderers prior to Cameron Jerome’s arrival 18 months ago.

Made 35 appearances last term as the Millers finished bottom of the Championship and is still under contract at the New York Stadium.

Danny Ward

Started out at Bolton, making his senior debut as a late substitute in a Premier League fixture against Sunderland in 2009.

Went on to have a decent spell at Huddersfield and also played for the likes of Rotherham and Cardiff before returning to the John Smith’s Stadium in the summer of 2020.

Has been linked with a return to the Whites on countless occasions over the years and is still under contract with the Terriers as they prepare for life in League One under new boss Michael Duff.

Sam Ashton

Achieved his dream of playing for Wanderers during an FA Cup tie against Watford in 2006, although he would never have expected to replace Jared Borgetti in attack!

Went on to have a career in the non-league pyramid, playing a big role in FC United’s progress and spending five years at Chorley.

Currently goalkeeping coach at Bury but still got minutes under his belt last season as the Shakers returned to Gigg Lane, becoming the hero in a penalty shoot-out against Ramsbottom.

Adam Le Fondre

Joined Bolton on loan from Cardiff in 2015 and returned two years later, helping secure promotion to the Championship under Phil Parkinson.

Was also on target in the memorable win against Nottingham Forest to avoid relegation on the final day and went on to have a spell in Australia with Sydney, becoming the club’s second-highest goalscorer with 72 in 128 games.

Spent last term in the Scottish Premiership with Hibernian, making 30 appearances in total, and is currently a free agent.

Clayton Donaldson

Played for the Whites in 2018/19, scoring twice in 34 appearances as Parkinson’s side were relegated from the second tier.

Went on to have stints at Bradford and York over the next three years, finding the back of the net 21 times.

Took up a player-manager role at Farsley Celtic last summer and kept them in National League North following a 2-0 victory against Buxton on the final day.

Darren Pratley

Racked up nearly 200 appearances during a seven-year spell at Wanderers before departing at the end of 2017/18.

Headed to Charlton and spent three seasons at the Valley before joining Leyton Orient in the summer of 2021.

Featured in both games against Bolton last term and could play at the Toughsheet Community Stadium again after signing a one-year contract extension with the O’s, who finished in 11th place.

Nathan Delfouneso

Headed to Wanderers in 2020 after Ian Evatt took charge and helped secure promotion straight back to League One.

Had a loan spell at Bradford in 2021/22 and was released the following summer, joining North West neighbours Accrington Stanley.

Spent last season in the non-league pyramid, initially with Chorley before heading to Hednesford Town in February.

Andy Lonergan

Had a three-year spell with the Whites between 2012 and 2015, making 51 appearances in the Championship.

Just joined Wigan in a player-coach role following stints at Everton, West Brom, Stoke and Liverpool among others.

Will now work with Sam Tickle and Tom Watson but will also be eligible to play at the Brick Community Stadium as Shaun Maloney’s side aim to build on their 12th-place finish, which would have been higher if not for points deductions.
