The 2021 Great North Run is looking uncertain, due to insurance concerns
The Great North Run is facing a 'struggle' due to issues getting insurance, should the event be called off due to Covid-19, the founder, Sir Brendan Foster says.
The 2020 event was due to be the 40th anniversary of the UK's largest half marathon.
It's not an easy time for race organisers and this week, Sir Brendan Foster, founder of the Great North Run, has highlighted the issue, amitting that the UK's largest half marathon was facing a 'struggle'. Forster said that 'the key tool' in holding major events was missing, as organisers face being liable for the costs if the event cannot go ahead.
Foster has called on the government and insurance sector to do more. The government said it was aware of the 'wider concerns' and is exploring different options to support events.
The Great North Run was due to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2020, but like many other races, organisers were forced to switch to a virtual event due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The 2021 event is due to take place on Sunday 12 September, with 57,000 adults signed up to run the iconic 13.1-mile course. Speaking about this year's event, Sir Brendan said organisers were 'cautiously optimistic' and reassured runners that they would look to hold an alternative race, should the event be unable to go ahead as planned.
'We will struggle, we will have to look forward to see how we can do it, we will have to see what shape we can do it,' Sir Brendan said.
