The 124th U.S. Open Golf Championship commenced with an exciting start on Thursday morning at the Pinehurst No. 2 course, as Patrick Cantlay took the lead after the first round in North Carolina. Friday provided more changes at the top and some surprises in Round 2.

Cantlay finished Day 1 in the lead at 5-under. He didn't fare as well in Round 2 with a birdie at the 6th hole followed by a double bogey two holes later. Another pair of birdies and bogeys saw him finish with a 1-over-71, good enough for second by the end of Friday's action.

Rising star Ludvig Åberg took advantage of Cantlay's early struggles to secure an early lead behind a 1-under front nine. He ended the day with a 1-under-69 to take the lead at 5-under. Cantlay moved to a tie for second at 4-under with Bryson DeChambeau, who shot a 1-under-69 Friday, and Thomas Detry, who had one of the best scores of the day with a 3-under 67. Hideki Matsuyama posted the best score of the day with a 4-under-66.

With the cut line set at 5-over, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, No. 13 Tommy Fleetwood, and No. 19 Cameron Young all avoided a surprise cut. All finished Round 2 at 5-over.
