26-Year-Old Frankie Perez Explains UFC Retirement: ‘What Better Way to Go Out'

In a shocking turn of events at UFC Fight Night 74 on Saturday, rising lightweight Frankie Perez announced his retirement following the biggest win of his career.

Perez (10-2) knocked out veteran Sam Stout in the featured fight on the event’s preliminary card. The bout was the 26-year-old’s second fight in the promotion and his first win inside the famed octagon.

“Me, being at 26, this is my first win in the UFC and my last,” Perez said immediately after the win in Saskatoon, Canada. “I’m done after this. I’ve brought my dreams to come true and I’m ready for the next chapter of my life. I’m done putting my family and body through all of this.”

Perez made his professional fighting debut in June 2011. He began his career by racking up eight consecutive wins. He got the call from UFC matchmakers to fight in the organization in late 2014. He lost his debut to Johnny Case in January, but remained fixated on his goal.

During the UFC Fight Night 74 Post Show, Perez further explained his decision to step away from fighting.

“I love this sport. I’m a fan of this sport. It just felt right doing it on top,” he said. “I lived it, man. I came here and I competed against one of the top lightweights ever and I knocked him out. I don’t know what better way to go out.”
