The 32: Why England's young guns should follow in Jadon Sancho's Dortmund footsteps

Tony Cascarino thinks England’s young Lions could learn a lot from plying their trade abroad rather than waiting for their chance in the Premier League.

The former Republic of Ireland footballer was a guest on Yahoo Sport’s daily World Cup show, The 32, on Monday morning in the wake of England’s 6-1 win over Panama.

He moved to France at the end of his career and had spells with Marseille and Nancy. England U20s won the World Cup and Jadon Sancho is one starlet to have made the move to foreign climes as he is playing his football in Germany with Borussia Dortmund.

Cascarino would recommended the experience to other young guns rather than see them stagnating at home.

He told The 32: “It’s really all down to money. There’s so much money in the Premier League. When I decided to go, Marseille was a big club, and they could afford to compete with the wages in the Premier League.

“Would I recommend it? Yes. I grew up when I moved abroad. I do think you are vulnerable when you go into a dressing room there because you’re isolated. It’s a different language so you don’t have much to say and nobody is going to listen to you.

“I really do feel I grew up when I moved abroad. I was 31 but I feel I matured as a person. I went there for two years and ended up staying for seven, so I played until I was 38 in France.

“I played for two terrific clubs in Marseille and Nancy and I loved my time at both. I completely dedicated my life to football out there because I think I was too much involved in all the lads stuff back in England. I know that’s all changed now and it is a completely different environment but at that time you could easily get caught out.”
