The transfer window has opened in Europe, coinciding with the expiration of numerous players' contracts throughout the continent.

While many of those out-of-contract stars will have already found new clubs or be close to striking agreements with them - as Adrian appears to be with Real Betis - that is not the case for every free agent. Some are still searching for their next team, such as David de Gea, who remains without an employer a year after leaving Manchester United.

Therefore, plenty of bargains remain available at this stage of the summer. Here are four players that could be useful for Liverpool...

Mathew Ryan

Liverpool looked at the Australia international as far back as 2015 when considering replacing Simon Mignolet under Brendan Rodgers. The goalkeeper could be an ideal replacement for the seemingly outgoing Adrian as a new third-choice stopper.

Ryan has spoken about having family and friends who are Reds, so there could be an emotional pull towards Anfield if there is interest. Since leaving Brighton after a loan spell at Arsenal, the goalkeeper has played for Real Sociedad, Copenhagen, and AZ Alkmaar.

Adrien Rabiot

A player more recently linked with Liverpool is Adrien Rabiot. The France international has a history of departing clubs on a free transfer after leaving Paris Saint-Germain for Juventus when his contract ended in 2019.

Rabiot could be a cost-effective replacement for Thiago, fulfilling a similar role as a defensive midfielder. His versatility was showcased by Didier Deschamps during the European Championship in Germany, where he also played on the left wing.

Mario Hermoso

With Joel Matip's contract officially expired at Liverpool, attention turns to potential replacements. Central defender Mario Hermoso could be a savvy acquisition, much like Matip was back in 2016.

The ex-Spain international has made 45 appearances across all competitions for Atletico Madrid and nearly 30 Champions League appearances. Having just turned 29 last month, Hermoso might be ready for a new challenge away from Spain this summer.

Guido Rodriguez

Another player potentially on the move is Guido Rodriguez. The defensive midfielder is currently representing Argentina in the Copa America, featuring in the country's 2-1 victory over Chile last weekend.

Rodriguez has spent the past four years with Real Betis, his first club outside of the Americas. He's clocked up over 170 appearances for the Seville-based team and while Barcelona are interested, Liverpool could still swoop in.
