  • Mauricio Pochettino has settled on a winning formula

Tottenham’s schedule has eased up considerably after their Europa League exit and, as we enter March, Pochettino has clearly settled on his best side, system and roster of reserves.

With Harry Kane, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen all fit to start after previously being doubts, the Argentinian picked the same XI that he had selected in the previous two games against Gent and Stoke – and they again lined up in a 3-4-2-1 formation.

The substitutes were also the same for the third match in succession, with Michel Vorm, Kevin Wimmer, Kieran Trippier, Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko, Heung-Min Son and Vincent Janssen all getting seats on the bench.

While Danny Rose will return to the side as soon as he is available, this consistency in selection can only help Spurs as they approach the final straight.

It looks like bad news for Georges-Kevin Nkoudou and Josh Onomah though. They continue to miss out on the 18-man squad and appear set for a quiet spring.

  • Kane continues his hot streak to go top of the goalscoring chart

Everton were unbeaten in nine league games when they arrived at White Hart Lane and their priority seemed to be to maintain that record and avoid a loss.

Ronald Koeman opted to play with three holding midfielders and, in the opening stages, the Toffees succeeded in frustrating Spurs and keeping them at arm’s length.

The Lilywhites struggled to get in behind their visitors – so Kane decided to simply bypass them.

There seemed little on when the 23-year-old picked up the ball on the left side in the 20th minute, but he moved infield and sent a 25-yard strike whistling past Joel Robles.

It was reminiscent of Kane’s long-range equaliser against Chelsea at the Lane in January 2015, when he really announced his arrival on the big stage. Again, the strike came out of nowhere at a time when Spurs were struggling to make headway through more intricate means.

While Robles could perhaps have done better and moved quicker, Kane’s effort underlined just why he is one of the Premier League’s top strikers – because of his ability to make match-defining contributions out of nowhere.

Indeed, this was the seventh time he had scored the opening goal in the Premier League this season.

Kane then went on to double his tally 10 minutes after the break, slotting coolly past Robles when Everton tried and failed to play out from the back, netting for the 15th time in 13 games.

  • Romelu Lukaku finally escapes his Belgian compatriots to score against Spurs

The Everton forward went into the match on level terms with Kane at the top of the Premier League goalscoring chart, but had never scored against Tottenham – largely because his countrymen Vertonghen and Alderweireld know him so well.

Vertonghen in particular has always performed well against his international colleague, and he did so again for 80 minutes today.

The defender made a perfectly-timed early challenge on Lukaku and continued to stay tight to him throughout, repeatedly nicking the ball away to ensure the big Everton man was unable to turn and gain momentum or even hold the ball up.

Meanwhile, when Lukaku got away from Eric Dier in the opening minutes, Alderweireld stepped in to halt his progress.

It seemed the pair were going to frustrate their compatriot again – but Vertonghen’s unfortunate slip 10 minutes from time let the danger man in, and he made no mistake, finding the bottom left corner.

Kane ultimately won the battle of the strikers this afternoon, triumphing 2-1 against his rival and moving clear at the top of the Premier League goalscoring chart with 19 goals – but the race for the golden boot looks set to remain close.

  • Spurs give their fans a nervy finish

Tottenham seemed to be cruising comfortably to a 2-0 victory but, in the end, their supporters were left biting their nails.

Lukaku’s goal set up a tense finish and there were groans of dismay when it was announced that there would be four minutes of injury time.

That turned into shouts of celebration as Spurs seemingly put the game to bed again, with substitute Harry Winks playing a clever free kick in to Dele Alli, who prodded past Robles to score for the second game in a row.

However, Everton responded again immediately, sending a free kick of their own into the box, where Enner Valencia finished to make it 3-2.

Tottenham have only conceded seven goals in the league at the Lane this season – and two of them came in the final 15 minutes of today’s contest.

Pochettino’s side deserved their latest triumph but they could have made life much easier for themselves and, on another day, those two late setbacks could have been very costly.

  • Tottenham set a new record for successive home wins

Despite the late drama, Spurs completed their 11th consecutive victory at White Hart Lane in all competitions, and their ninth in the Premier League – a new club record in the top flight.

They are one step closer to leaving the stadium without a single home defeat this campaign and will be big favourites to overcome League One side Millwall in next Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final – which is due to be the last cup tie to be played at the Lane.

Tottenham’s second successive top-flight victory has also strengthened their position in the top four, ensuring they will finish the day in second place.

The Lilywhites faced a tricky task against seventh-placed Everton, but they have nonetheless matched Liverpool’s victory on Saturday, re-establishing their four-point lead ahead of the Reds.

They have also capitalised on Manchester United and Arsenal’s dropped points, moving six points ahead of their north London rivals – although the fifth-placed Gunners have a game in hand.
