Vincent Janssen gets the nod but draws a blank

When Tottenham faced Millwall in the FA Cup last month Janssen was the third-choice striker and Mauricio Pochettino only brought him on when his side were 4-0 up.

Three games later, the Dutchman was chosen to lead the line from the start against Watford today, despite the fact both Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son were available.

It underlines the 22-year-old’s marked improvement since he got that monkey off his back by scoring his first goal from open play in the closing stages against Millwall.

He became more and more involved at Burnley last Saturday and then carried the momentum into Wednesday’s clash at Swansea, making a key impact off the bench by setting up Spurs’ second goal, playing a part in the third and forcing two saves.

He deserved his place in the starting line-up against the Hornets and, with Janssen deployed up front, Son was also able to play to his strengths, running at goal rather than with his back to it. The result? The South Korean very nearly scored a hat-trick.

Janssen was heavily involved in the early stages and had the first chance, rolling expertly past Craig Cathcart. However, he was denied by ex-Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes and then missed an even better chance around the 20-minute mark.

There seemed only one outcome as a low cross reached him at point-blank range, but it bounced awkwardly off him onto the crossbar – and moments later he was just too far away to finish off a similar delivery across the goalmouth.

Janssen had posed a threat but failed to finish his chances, and he was withdrawn on the hour-mark as Kane made his return. After a couple of confidence-boosting performances, will this outing set him back at all?

Tottenham’s attacking quality shines through in another quickfire salvo

Watford kept their opponents at bay for the opening half an hour and their physical approach was particularly evident in their treatment of Mousa Dembele, who was roughed up on a few occasions.

Indeed, the Belgian was fouled in the build-up to the breakthrough as Abdoulaye Doucoure pulled his shirt, grabbed him round the neck and then pushed him over.

But referee Anthony Taylor crucially played advantage and, even as the home fans bellowed for a free kick and Mauricio Pochettino showed his irritation on the sideline, Dele Alli whipped a beautiful curling shot into the very top right corner.

It was the 20-year-old’s sixth goal in seven games and he has now scored 16 times in the league this season, leaving him level with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, three behind Harry Kane and five behind top scorer Romelu Lukaku.

Just like at Swansea on Wednesday night, that initial strike was quickly followed by two more in a devastating 11-minute spell.

Son’s cross was deflected to Eric Dier, who lashed home his second goal in three games – and the typically influential Christian Eriksen then found Son, who fired into the bottom left corner to make it 3-0 before the break.

There are few teams who are more dangerous when they are ahead and getting space, and Son registered again eight minutes after the restart, netting for the seventh time in five games and the 18th time this season in total.

Tottenham simply have a deadly array of in-form attacking players and, when star striker Kane came off the bench on the hour-mark, his side were already 4-0 up.

Spurs could and should have won by more in the end – they hit the woodwork four times, with Kane hitting the crossbar with the last kick of the match.

Kieran Trippier loves playing against Watford

There was some surprise that Kyle Walker was rested for the second weekend in a row, giving him only one start out of the last three matches.

However, Trippier has a good record against Watford, having scored one goal and set up a further three in his three previous games against the Hornets.

Perhaps Pochettino had that in mind when he selected the 26-year-old today. Either way, the decision paid off.

It was Trippier who delivered the crosses for Janssen in the first half, sending two deadly volleyed crosses in front of Watford’s goalkeeper, inviting a tap-in.

He then set up Son’s second goal with a ball to the back post, and created two more chances in the second half – chipping the ball over the top for Kane before freeing Son with a fine curling ball from the touchline.

Like a number of Spurs’ players, Watford will be keen to see the back of Trippier for another year.

Spurs continue to enjoy home comforts

It still remains to be seen whether this is indeed to be the last ever season at White Hart Lane but, if so, Tottenham are certainly giving their fans some memories to treasure.

This was Spurs’ 14th consecutive victory in N17 and they have now notched up 45 goals in that period – an average of 3.2 per match.

There could be only three more games at the Lane and that unbeaten season on home turf is inching ever closer.

Additionally, if Watford can be considered local rivals – Vicarage Road is less than 20 miles away – then Spurs can add this scalp to their derby wins over Crystal Palace, West Ham, Chelsea and Millwall this season.

There’s no let-up in the pressure

Tottenham have faded at the end of the last two seasons but there is no evidence of a slow-down this time as they continue to keep the pressure on league leaders Chelsea.

This victory left the Lilywhites four points behind the pacesetters as they waited for their rivals to face Bournemouth.

The Blues remain favourites but they will have to keep looking over their shoulder – and it is surely only a matter of time before Pochettino’s side secure their place in the Champions League.
