£50m replacement, Ivan Toney offer - Liverpool given Mohamed Salah verdict

Mohamed Salah of Liverpool

Liverpool are planning on having Mohamed Salah see out his contract at the club, despite speculation around his future following a spat with manager Jurgen Klopp and new boss Arne Slot expected at Anfield next season.

And fans in the ECHO comments section have been discussing whether this is the right call.

Salah has one year remaining on his contract, and was the subject of a huge £150 million bid by Al-Ittihad during the Saudi Pro League spending spree of 2023. Salah's conduct during a 2-2 draw with West Ham, coupled with his poor form in recent weeks, has left many questioning whether the 31-year-old will still be a Liverpool player come the start of next season.

Commenter Ghostwriter has no doubts: "Form is temporary. Class is permanent. So-called fans turning on the club's all time top scorer in the Premier League and European football need to take a look at themselves and not only 'sing when we're winning'."

User Ch23 agrees: "Salah has been a star at Liverpool for many years. After just a few weeks of not playing his best, some people think he should be sold. That's really sad. Salah could continue to play top-level football into his late 30s..."

Fidelis Fautor thinks there's no market for Salah regardless: “There is no club in Europe that needs Salah badly enough to bid anything close to what Liverpool got offered last year for a soon to be 32 year old player, and most of the big name clubs will be more than happy to wait for one more year and get him on a free transfer in June of '25.”

The ECHO's Tom Doyle says that a Saudi team would be willing to drop £100 million on the Egyptian, but Gibsonsg isn't so sure: “Doubt there's any bid coming anywhere close to these figures. Which top club in Europe would be in for him, and need him, and could afford him? Really only PSG if Mbappe leaves as expected, but don't expect any thing more than £50M imo."

Commenter Scousered says to think about the future: “Mo has been fantastic for LFC, but he is 31 now and if we can get anywhere near 100mill we should bite their hands off. Mo will not be able to drop into a midfield slot as he gets older and loses all his pace, he isn't that type of player, he is an out-and-out goal scorer. Use the money to buy a proven goal scorer. Maybe Toney from Brentford.”

User RobbieWilliams writes: “Get rid this summer, take the money as you can guarantee he will walk for nothing next season. Should have taken the £150 million they got offered last summer. A player on the way down if ever I saw one.”

Scratchthesurface disagrees: “Despite missing three months, he still managed to score 17 goals, becoming one of the top scorers in the league, once again. Remove his goals, considering he operates from the wing, and we'd find ourselves out of the top 4, with no trophies to speak of. So, if we were to subtract Salah from the equation, do you really think Gakpo, Nunez, and Diaz could step up and replicate those goals?"

"It's highly doubtful we'll find another winger of his calibre, especially considering there aren't any others in the Premier League... Following your reasoning, in addition to a new manager, we also need to scout for a new winger and a striker capable of filling the void left by those goals.”
