CBD is often regarded as the friendly, harmless side of cannabis. Unlike THC-containing marijuana, which is still classified as a schedule 1 drug and fully illegal in several states, hemp-derived CBD is federally legal and it's everywhere. It's in baked goods, kombucha skincare products, and endless self-care and wellness-geared items on the market. Despite all the popularity, though, there's a problematic side to the industry that we can't ignore.

Despite roughly the same rates of cannabis usage, the ACLU reports that Black Americans are 3.73 times more likely than white Americans to be arrested for marijuana. Even though CBD is largely legalized, there's still a large disparity as far as who gets to be the stakeholders in the cannabis industry. According to Marijuana Business Daily in 2017, approximately 81% of cannabis business owners or founders are white, while only 4% are Black. On top of this, mainstream representations of wellness and self-care—which CBD is often associated with—primarily centers white women, pushing Black women who are both seeking and creating forms of wellness to the margins.

So, while we indulge in a range of CBD goodies to drink, eat, or slather all over our bodies, we should also be striving to invest in Black communities at the same time. To do so, and to celebrate National CBD Month, we rounded up 10 Black women-owned CBD shops to support right now. From skincare products that promise glowy skin to infused honey that promote mindfulness, you can find CBD in any form you need below.

Homebody

Sisters Rebecca Grammer-Ybarra and Christy Grammer started Homebody after closing their food-service company of 12 years, Suite 106 Cupcakery—which included three bakeries, an award-winning food truck, and a commercial kitchen. According to an interview with Self, this shift came out of a personal need for self-care, after running such a fast-paced life for so long. The two teamed up with a holistic physician to create the brand's CBD bath bomb soaks, which are designed to address pain and stress, boost mood, and assist with sleep and overall wellbeing. "Our objective is, and will always be, to help people feel more at home in their bodies," Grammer-Ybarra told Self.

Noirebud

Carolyn Gray, who founded Noirebud in Brooklyn in 2018, found that many cannabis brands on the market failed to pay homage to the many people of color who have been incarcerated for marijuana. So, she created Noirebud, a line of luxury CBD products including candies, teas, and body butters, specifically with the Black and Brown community in mind. "I wanted this brand to be unapologetically bold and Black, like me," Gray says, per the website.

Buena Botanicals

Rah Hines started the family-owned CBD brand with her sister, Coral, after meeting a hemp-farm owner and learning how CBD could ease symptoms of anxiety and depression. The two then launched Buena Botanicals, a line of all-natural full-spectrum CBD products, in 2019. In addition to offering wellness-focused products, including bath bars, bath bombs, oils, and creams, the brand also aims to educate consumers. "Even though CBD is really popular now, a lot of people—especially Black and brown people—still don't understand or know what it is," Rah Hines told Well + Good. "A lot of our job, as a brand and as people, is to educate our consumers."
