Celtic Fan View: Three key matches from the Bhoys' record-breaking unbeaten run

Celtic set a British record for most domestic matches undefeated with their win at St.Johnstone last weekend. The victory in Perth took their tally to 63 matches without tasting a single loss on home soil under Brendan Rodgers’ stewardship. It’s an achievement that deserves huge respect and recognition and puts this side among the best in British football’s rich history.

We’ve taken a look back and picked out three key matches during this streak and what it taught us about the Hoops with Rodgers at the helm.

Motherwell 3- 4 Celtic (December, 2016)

The Hoops found themselves in deep trouble at Fir Park last December. Motherwell were 2-0 up at half-time and despite being pegged back to 2-2, The Steelmen went 3-2 in front with less than 20 minutes remaining. Goals from Stuart Armstrong and Tom Rogic in the 90th minute, however, earned a magnificent three points.

This, undoubtedly, was the most thrilling match of the Scottish Premiership last term which proved the resolve and incredible mentality that Rodgers instilled within a short space of time at the club. Not once did the Bhoys look or even think they were beaten, rather, they fought until the final whistle.

It’s easy to say now but this was one of signs that showed the self-belief within the team was extremely high and subsequently something very special was brewing. They backed themselves to overcome their toughest challenge in the league at the time and succeeded in the best possible way.

Rangers 1-5 Celtic (April, 2017)

Seven months previous to this drubbing, Celtic embarrassed Rangers by the same scoreline at Parkhead. What made this win all the more sweet was that it occurred at the home of their bitter rivals. On the pitch it also showed how far this team had progressed.

This was a severe lesson in football which showed just how large the gulf between the two clubs is. Celtic controlled the game from start to finish and were absolutely relentless going forward. The pace, tempo, movement, ball retention, pressing off the ball and ruthlessness all came together which crushed the Gers.

The firepower within the squad’s ranks was also on full view that day. That’s been a constant theme throughout the Rodgers era, the attacking threat is spread across the pitch and thus goals are always likely to come from one source. The goals that day were scored by five different players in five different positions hence when it all clicks for the Hoops, nobody can stop them.

Aberdeen 1-2 Celtic (May, 2017)

With an invincible treble on the line, this Scottish Cup final displayed the immense character and fitness that exists within the squad. Indeed, ‘character’ is a word that has followed Rodgers around and not always for the right reasons but the willingness to keep pushing forward at the end of a gruelling campaign was indicative of the effect Rodgers has had on this group of players. They wanted more even when most in the same circumstances would settle for the safe option.

At 1-0 down, Armstrong immediately replied to the Dons’ opener then Rogic sealed the victory with a superb solo goal. While Aberdeen wilted as the game progressed at Hampden, this team epitomised their upward trajectory under Rodgers in that they went from strength to strength. The much improved levels of fitness fused with their talent and confidence make this outfit so dangerous as the Reds discovered in heartbreaking fashion.
